The cons balance out the pros.

I already had a standard chimney starter, but I wanted this trap-door style for my particular grill. I have an Akorn Kamado, which is a deep egg-style grill, pouring charcoals into the Akorn can be cumbersome since you're working with a deep grill and can't exactly pour charcoals into it without stirring up a mess, you could probably get around that problem with a shovel, but you still end up looking like an awkward infomercial with sparks and debris flying everywhere.
With the quick-release starter, you can simply pull the lever to and drop the coals from the bottom and you're then left with a somewhat civilized stack of coals to work with; this is much less chaotic than the alternative of dumping coals from 4-6 inches out of the top of the starter. Simply having more control over the coals as they leave the starter is a strong 'pro' for me.
Cons would be:
- The airflow of this unit might not be as good as the 'fixed' model so light times may take a little longer
- The hatch often separates from the cylinder but can be easily put back in place
If they could improve the design of the hatch to allow more airflow and remain intact, that would warrant another star.

Although I thought it was a brilliant idea to have the release lever and easily drop the hot coals into the preferred vessel, it is not the case. Great company with a great idea but I would go with a different model. More often than not the trap door drops before the coals are ready and you're left with a hot mess of wasted charcoal.
Fantastic large capacity charcoal chimney for under $20
G. J. Smith•July 19, 2017
Fantastic large capacity charcoal chimney for under $20. Works exactly as advertised and does what its supposed to to. I feel compelled to address 2 negatives mentioned in other reviews. #1 - the chimney discolors after use and especially if left outdoors. Duh! What do you expect? This is not a gazillion dollar NASA re-entry vehicle. High heat and exposure to the elements will of course impact the appearance of most metals. #2 - The bottom drops out after dumping the hot coals. Another Duh! Again, what do you expect for $20? To design and utilize a door return mechanism that will stand up to repeated high heat would probably result in a retail cost of at least $50. After you dump the hot coals, simply invert the chimney, pull the door release mechanism and viola....the door returns to the proper position and is ready for your next use. Common sense.

Works fine but after each use the bottom falls out and has to be reinserted. Not as advertised and not what I had in mind. I was better off with my old one that I had to turn upside down to release the coals.

The first time I used this the handle fell off because the screws used on it were too short. I love the concept of not having to turn the chimney upside down, but the manufacturer had to know the screws were too short when they were installed. I can't get the screws that came in it out, to replace them with longer screws.
