I use these lights to illuminate steps leading to my front door and on a low fence I have that borders the street. All the lights shipped to me have worked and had some charge out of the box. There is a simple push on-push off switch on the back. The light is warm and is not too harsh or bright. The lights are canted to point at a downward angle, which keeps dark sky advocates satisfied, but puts the light where it is needed.
The lights come on before it is completely dark and last well into the wee hours of the morning. As noted by others, it is extremely useful to make a template to help in properly spacing the screws to fit into the two keyhole openings on the back of the lights. Alternatively, you could use some type of velcro mounting tape to ease installation, but I prefer the secure physical attachment of the screws.
I have not had these long enough to evaluate battery life, the ease of changing the batteries, or how well they hold up to years of exposure to the elements. But so far, I give this product five stars.

These are still working wonderfully after a year. I found it hard to line up the screws to make it fit perfectly in the bracket (the hole is not forgiving and small) so it is a lot of trial and error even after measuring perfectly. The lights are bright and light up the steps. In the winter, they only last until about halfway thru the night.. in the summer they work all night. I have small feet so don't have an issue with them sticking out but anyone with regular to large feet will find that their heel hits the light if you're coming down the stairs. My recommendation is to put them on the far side of the steps, not in the middle or where you'd usually step down.
