this thing is awesome. If you have a smart phone
Amazon Customer✓ Verified PurchaseOctober 2, 2017
Combined with heart monitor and cadence sensor (separate purchases), this thing is awesome. If you have a smart phone, it will upload your rides while you ride. My wife worries about me on the road, this thing sends her an email (again, you need a smart phone) with a link to a map showing my progress as I ride. Even if you don't have smartphone, I would still recommend. You can connect it to your computer and upload all the of your ride data. Other than my bike, this is the best thing I ever purchased for cycling.
Absolutely fantastic

The interface is easy to navigate and the device connects seamlessly with the phone app via Bluetooth. I've never had a problem with satellite reception either. I don't want to be messing with a touchscreen interface while my fingers are all sweaty and dirty, so the physical buttons are perfect. It keeps track of every single bit of information about my ride that I could possibly want, which I can track easily through Garmin Connect and Strava. Add the speed sensor onto the wheel to get turbo-accurate information about your ride.

I wouldn't say no to a longer-lasting battery, though. Seems a bit short and might be problematic for a ride day that lasts more than 4 hours.
Exceeded my expectations

My first GPS bike computer but interface familiar as I have owned several Garmin watches. Screen is easy to read for my 53 year old eyes. Not that hard to change settings. Uploads to Strava on my iPhone automatically. Yesterday I did my first 40 mile solo ride following a TPX course with turn by turn directions. Was impressed that I could join the course anywhere (but when you get to the "end" you have to restart the course but it does not reset total miles etc. so it doesn't reset the ride which is good). Made it a stress free ride in unfamiliar territory.

I bought this having finally lost my 510. Very easy to use and set up and works perfectly as far as syncing up to Garmin connect and Strava. Buttons are easy to use once I stopped trying to touch screen like previous Edge. Screen is easy to read with it mounted just in front of bars. Use it for mountain biking with garmin speed sensor, cadence, and heart rate monitor and all work together perfectly. Very pleased with purchase
Pros and cons vs the Edge 1000 (big con: map size!)
The Wheels Go Round✓ Verified PurchaseJuly 31, 2016
I have a Garmin Edge 1000, and the 520 recapitulates all of its functionality on a smaller screen. Navigation and selection through buttons is more tedious than with a touch screen, but more reliable.

One difference from the 1000 is that the 520 does not navigate reliably with GPX files. You need to use TCX files. But the biggest difference (and drawback!) for me is the map size. You can only put a 50 Mb map on the unit, versus several Gb for the Edge 1000. This means that instead of having a cycling/hiking map for the entire US, I can only put on a map for my local area. This is a pretty big drawback, as it is precisely when you are going to a new area that your Garmin could be most useful. You will need to remember beforehand to take your current maps off and put on those for the local area where you are going. If you forget and download a ride, you can still navigate along the course, but you will get no guidance when deviating from it.

Why did Garmin not include an expansion slot for a 4 Gb memory card as they did for much earlier units?
