Detection distance is guaranteed. Perform pretty well for me.

The distance the receiver can detect a signal ("ultrasonic waves" from a leak /transmitter) is very much determined by the amplitude of the signal (ie, how loud it is, even that you can't hear it with your ears.) and to lesser extent, directional qualities and frequency. If you're just concerned with the transmitter-receiver reception, it is roughly 10-15 feet in open space: obviously, if transmitter is "buried" inside some vessel and its signal only has a very small escape hole, the effective detection distance falls to a few feet.

Not sensitive enough to find leaks. Can easily hear what it can detect with my own ears.
A good one is expensive and for the money it is worth a shot. Worked for us.

A leak detector is typically quite expensive. Although this one works best with the headphones (the light proved worthless) listening for the change in pace of the beep it was quite effective in finding vacuum leaks in the glass reactors we were working with. Even small leaks, although you need to take care as the detector is very directional. So for the price it is certainly worth a shot. I am glad I gave it one.

Pre-blowerdoor testing for air gaps around windows and doors.
Not sensitive enough to pick up air leaks around fittings ...

Not sensitive enough to pick up air leaks around fittings in a compressed air piping system. This was my intended use. The product works if the leak is bigger but by that time I can hear the hissing unaided by ear.
