Makes Viewing More Enjoyable

This 5 position, 2 inch filter wheel (manual) is well built, has a nice solid feel, and is easy to operate. I use this wheel for visual use with my LP and nebula filters and it allows me to quickly perform A/B comparisons between broadband LP, narrowband LP, OIII, and Ha, and no filter. Think of a trip to the optometrist, which one looks better, A or B.
It's really that simple. I only use 4 filters leaving one filter spot empty. In addition to being a really efficient way to do these comparisons, it also works well to store filters and keep them clean and safe. No more fumbling around in the dark with filter cases, screwing and unscrewing, or struggling to see which filter is which. On this version (2 inch) the bearings are sealed and all the adapter were included to quickly install this into the optical train although the unit is small enough it can just be left in place between viewing sessions. Using this with a Celestron CPC925 HD with a 2 inch visual back and 2 inch diagonal. No issues with focus or clearance.

Will probably purchase a second unit and equip it with all of my planetary and polarizing filters for viewing with the solar system.
Overall good.

One of the 5 locations had an issue with the threads. Luckily I had a filter I don't care much about, so I forced that one into it first to correct the threads so I wouldn't damage one of my more expensive filters. Have to take a star off for that, potential to cause damage to one of your other pieces of equipment is a big deal. Also the opening where the wheel sticks through so you can change positions - is gaping! I can't image any scenario other than pitch black where stray light doesn't leak in through there. The slot is way wider than it needs to be. It's solid metal, so it's heavy, but sturdy. Movement is smooth, but be careful if you disassemble as there are spring loaded balls (detents) that give it a nice "clicky" movement between positions. The balls and the springs can go flying if you're not careful. I keep a gallon plastic bag over it when not in use to keep dust from entering the grand canyon on the side of this thing and getting into my filters and optic train, and a black t-shirt over it when imaging to keep stray light out. I'm sure you probably don't get these concerns when you pay $500 for a high end electronic one, but I'm on a budget so I appreciate that us folks have options too. I'll actually use my filters now that it's easy to switch between them. The included adapters can be configured to use this in several ways but that also means you could wind up using your filters backwards. That is okay for some filters, but not all. Overall I'm quite satisfied.
Review of 5 filter wheel

The filter wheel is built well but be careful of the tiny ball bearings and springs recessed into thee wells when you install the filters. Once reinstalled my unit locked up as I rotated the wheel. Using a small Q-Tip I put a small dab of light-weight Lubriplate grease around the metal bearing surfaces (next to the ball bearings) and now it moves buttery smooth. If you are using with an eyepiece rather than a camera be aware it requires considerably more than the stated 20mm back-focus. With the included eyepiece adapter the total back-focus of the filter wheel is 2.15" or about 55mm.

The media could not be loaded. See my video review for a "real time" assembly of this awesome filter wheel! A couple of additional thoughts: the UHC filter that I thought would not fit in the wheel because it's frame was thicker that the Astromania filters... it fit easily! As for the ball bearings, I did not have any problem with them "falling out" and I have had this apart at least 3x already installing new filters along the way. Given that the tube (that goes into the telescope's 2" holder) is threaded for a 2" filter this will actually expand the total to 6 filters (if it works for you). I have given this a test run and it was a breeze to change the filter at the scope in the middle of the night! In the two photos you can see what a fully loaded unit weights in both pounds and grams. You will likely need to do some counter-balancing on both declination and RA axis. Also, if you order a bunch of stuff from Astromania they will give you % off the total order! I saved at least $30 with my total order!

Disassembly Required? I was able to load my screw thread filters rather easily without taking the thing apart. Those who don't read the instructions are way ahead on this one!
