Great product. I wanted this kind of design with an atomic auto time set feature; however, this works just a well. There is one button cell (have not removed to check, but probably the very common CR2032) that comes pre-installed from the factory that is the time back up power source. You can optionally install two additional AA batteries for use not connected to a wall plug. The backlight feature is restricted to brief moments when pressing the snooze button as to conserve battery power when not plugged in. Just another wonderful feature.
The time is set for EST at the factory. Upon arrival it showed the correct time so no need to set it. Depending on your time zone you may need to change it. There is an easy time zone setting that can be adjusted so as to not actually change the time setting directly. You can also toggle auto DST adjust on/off if you happen to be in AZ. The display is great to look at and the LCD screen is set up for for the ideal viewing angle to be more down/straight on which is perfect in my use case. If you will be looking up at the screen it might be more problematic for you as that is not the best viewing angle. The screen is unfortunately a soft polymer susceptible to scratching. It may sound silly but I did some measuring and research to select a glass phone screen protector to keep the clear viewing pleasure lasting a long time.
The alarm sound increases in volume the longer it goes off before you intervene. A pleasant upgrade from my previous alarm. It is not an overly obnoxious and jarring buzz. If you are a heavy sleeper and need loud jarring traffic jam style noise to get you out of bed this may not be the best choice, but other than that it is a wonderful alarm clock.

This is a very cool product, displays the tempt., time and date/day! The thing thats cool about this clock is that it will automatically reset with the proper time if unplugged!
