Must have if you grow orchids

Easy to use and feels solid, not cheap and tacky. I use this to measure the light where I grow orchids. Before I got it I wasn't sure that I had to have it, but having now used it and measured the light in various areas of the room and at various times of day, I can see how important it is. I was considering some new orchid purchases -- a couple of varieties that I don't yet have, and that require medium to high light. Glad I got this meter first because I now know that those orchids would not have done well in my space. The money that would have gone to those orchids has gone to adding a couple of lights. Not as much fun as new orchids but will save me from having to watch them languish. So, this little meter has had a pretty big impact on my orchid strategy going forward.

Seems accurate - I checked against my phone's light meter app, and while the numbers I got were different, they were consistently different. It's been great for having an objective measurement to decide where to put houseplants. Like every other reviewer, I like that it has a cover for the sensor dome, but I wish it was tethered to the meter itself so I don't have an extra piece of plastic to lose. I'm very happy with this purchase, and that small gripe would not prevent me from purchasing again or recommending to other houseplant enthusiasts.

I have no way to calibrate or validate this device, but it seems relatively accurate. When compared to the lux meter on my phone, the numbers are relatively close (same order of magnitude at least) and I'd trust this device over a phone lux meter.
I do wish that the little panel that covers up the dome was somehow connected to the meter, through a piece of rubber or something, or that the cover slid down the back. Something that kept it with the device, so that you didn't have to carry around/keep track of it while using the meter.
It is pretty amazing to compare light levels in different environments. Since humans see light more or less logarithmically, we don't notice nearly the same discrepancy in light intensity. A regular room may be 100 lux, shade outside may be 25000 lux.
In any case, for the price, it's a good little lux meter. It's a bit of a novelty, useful for checking if your plants are getting enough light, using it as a photography light meter, things like that.
