Poor uniformity between lenses

Individual lenses seem to work well, but tolerance between lenses is terrible. I order 2 lenses in a single order for a dual-camera inspection system. The lenses have such drastically different working distances (bottom of lens to sample) that I cannot use them together. The photos show that when both lenses are at the same zoom and in focus, there is more than 1" of vertical difference in the lens position. For this reason, you can't assume a replacement lens will work in the same setup.
Also, the lens tubes are slightly different diameter on the knurled part. One tube fit into my 50mm ring mount, the other did not and required a custom mount.
