It works. Using 28 AWG or thicker is pretty safe but if you use 38 AWG or thinner you can expect the wire to break often. $185 is a bit pricey for this item, but I bought it anyway. The box that it came in was very damaged and sliced open and taped back together with US Customs tape that said that US Customs tore it open and searched the contents.
There is some assembly and I bolted it down to a folding table. You can pull the handle part that you turn and put it back on in reverse to get different ratios of spinning spool/hand crank.
