cute design and poor quality

I wanted to give my daughter a latch kit like I use to play with as a child. This set has a cute picture, but it is not printed on the mesh. Instead they printed a grid on the mesh and provide a chart like you'd use in cross stitch. My nine year old could easily follow it, but I think it would have been more fun for her if the image was printed. Also, the yarn quality is very cheep and scratchy. It does not resemble the soft plush kits I remember from childhood. I think if it had a better tactile feel, my daughter would have enjoyed the kit more and we would have ended up purchasing more sets. If this is the quality, than it really isn't worth the money or time. Also, as noted in the description, it does not come with a hook so I purchased that separately.
Pattern is not printed on the canvas so it may be hard for younger kids

I loved the idea of this as I remember doing this as a child and loving it. What I am truly disappointed in is that this came with a "pattern" that was a blank canvas that was 5 grids high (with 1/2 grid, 5 squares at the bottom and also on the top) and 6 grids wide. I remember the actual pattern printed on the grid that was the exact size so it was doable for a younger child. This is for my 7 year old who has never done this before. I just used Sharpies to color it for her so it is easier. I am sure if she was older this might be acceptable but it is her first time and I was surprised the "pattern" was a blank grid, especially since I thought this was touted as a learning craft project. I will see if I can find another brand that does pattern printing on the canvas. Until she is older I won't buy this one again.
Purchased hook separately, but everything else included.

This was my very first latch hook project and I loved it! Even though I had to buy the hook separately, the rest came in the box and the kit was cheaper to buy through Amazon then my local craft stores. The pattern is not printed on the grid, which worried me at first since a lot of the other reviews complained about that, but they include the pattern on paper and it was very easy to follow! Had no problem reading the directions and getting started. I even ended up turning it into a pillow for my son, which he loves! And I think the colors are pretty true to the box and picture included. For my first kit, this was super easy and I enjoyed doing it.
Didn't like having to seperate the yarn.

I bought this latch hook kit for my granddaughter who has never done any latch hooking at all. This kit is a small size & it doesn't have the pattern printed on the canvas. I really liked that because the first time I tried to work a latch hook kit on a printed canvas I got all messed up with it. You would think that it would be easier to work on a printed canvas but I found that the un-printed canvas was so much easier. This canvas has the squares printed on it in blue so you just count the little squares to find where your yarn needs to go. It is simple & small, great for a first time latch hooker. I wish that each kit would also include the latch hook tool but none of them do so you have to buy your latch hook tool separate. I didn't like the fact that the yarn was not separated, that chore we had to do ourselves & that was time consuming which had to be done before the kit could be started. I would of given it 4 stars if the yarn had been separated & I would of given it 5 stars if the yarn was separated & it had included the latch hook tool. But although I only gave it 3 stars I still really liked this kit, I just didn't like the extras I had to deal with in order to work this kit.
Very doable for an 8-yr-old

I bought this latch hook project for my 8-yr-old daughter. The canvas is not stamped, but there are 10x10 gridlines. I know a lot of people are complaining about the design not being stamped on the canvas, but here's the thing: my daughter started out on a different kit that WAS stamped, but the colors and pattern on the canvas didn't always match up with the colors on the printed pattern, so having it stamped ended up being more confusing. I told her to just ignore the colors on the canvas and go by the pattern on the instruction sheet, and she found that to be much easier and more straightforward. Now that she's working on this unicorn kit, she's having no trouble at all working on a blank canvas. In fact, she has said that it's easier to work on because there are no colors on the canvas to trip her up. She started at the bottom left corner, as indicated in the instructions, and just goes across, row by row, coloring in the boxes she's completed with a marker as she goes along. I think this is a great precursor to counted cross stitch, which she eventually wants to learn how to do.
As many others have noted, this kit does not come with the latch hook tool, so be sure to order a few (I say a few in case one gets misplaced). You'd think that something called a "kit" would have all the tools you need to complete it, but I think it makes sense that the hook isn't included. If you were to buy several of these kits over time, and they each came with the latch hook, you'd eventually end up with a drawer full of latch hooks. I'd rather buy a few than have a bunch that I don't need.
The pattern and colors are very pretty. My only gripe is that two of the blues -- sky blue and dusty blue -- are so similar that you really have to look hard to tell them apart. They should have chosen more contrasting colors for those two blues. We pulled out all of the sky blues and put them in a ziploc baggie at the start of the project so that my daughter wouldn't have to stop and figure out which blue was which every time she pulled out a strand to use. Aside from that, though, this is a great project that will provide many hours of latch hooking happiness.
