It turns out I've been knocking a puck of soap around a shaving bowl unnecessarily for years. Thanks to Amazon reviews, I learned that a puck of shaving soap belongs in a cup, not a bowl. Huge difference. The puck stays in place nicely. Other reviewers mention microwaving the puck in the cup for a few seconds. I didn't need to do that - it is locked in. I can rinse the cup with water, turn it upside down, and the puck stays in place. The cup also looks very nice on my counter. The only thing I would like to see changed is the material. It's ceramic like a coffee cup, and so far it has stood up to the beating of my brush with no chips yet, but I fear the cup may get chipped at some point.

Its fine really, and its deep enough so usually your lather won't gush out from swirling your brush to thicken it. Unless you are using a very stiff brush or too much water. One point deduction for just being a tad over priced.

Let me start by saying the product it self is of good quality, easy to hold in the hand and the price is fair. I purchased the mug because of the reported dimensions (5x4x5). The dimensions are, however, incorrect. The actual dimensions are 4.5 x 3 1/8 x 4.5. The slight size difference may seem insufficient but many of the high-end shaving soaps such as Taylor of Old Bond Street which is the brand I use, are 3" and not the standard 1.75"-2". Had the product been the actual stated size of 5x4x5, I would not have returned the product.

I was going to give this shave mug a 3 star rating because the size is being misrepresented. However, this is not the fault of the product. It's important to note that this is a shaving mug and not a bowl. It is designed to be used with a shaving puck. Adding a puck of your choice brings the bottom of the mug to the proper depth to use with any shaving brush handle size, narrow or wide. This mug has just the right amount of weight, not to heavy to hold and load your brush. I have small hands and it is very easy to hold with the provided handle. Note, about the handle and the angle of the mouth opening, it's a tight fit to wrap my thumb around the top of the handle.
Instead of using my thumb, I slip the handle between my index and middle fingers to get a much better grip. It's a nice addition to anyone's shaving den.
