No assembly required - it came as a whole piece, ready to use. We would wind up with magazines, newspapers, letters, etc.. strewn all over our kitchen table. Now, all of that is neatly organized in this rack - and it looks wonderful, to boot!! We have a wrought iron spiral staircase and it looks good standing up against it. Wish I had found it a lot earlier....
