Able to take 'oversize' dog on the plane
J. Moser✓ Verified Purchase•September 30, 2016
I had to travel from California to Minneapolis for a 2-week stay. It was too long a time period to impose on friends and didn't want to leave my 14 year old schnauzer mix in a kennel. I researched for ages on products and blogs to see what might work to get the 24 lb fellow in cabin & under the seat. This carrier was amazing. It was a snug fit when all zipped up but the expandable side gave him room to stretch out and sleep during the flight. The multiple openings were great. I was able to unzip the top to lift him out for the TSA check, then I sat on the floor against a wall in the boarding area with the side section open & his head in my lap until called. The back has a wide strap that was perfect to slide over the old style folding wheeled luggage cart. That plus the semi-firm padded mat made it easier & more stable to wheel him through the terminal instead of carrring him with the shoulder strap. Be sure to have the zippers on top when closed: my guy nosed up one end side attempting an escape when we landed. I purchased the 18x11x11 because that was the requirement for United Airlines. I was petrified I would be turned away at the ticket counter because my little guy could not stand up in this carrier but the mesh made it difficult to see what was inside. I provided a health certificate from my vet & the agent never checked the dog. Caution - be sure to research your plane type and actual under-seat measurement. I used points to upgrade to 1st class to assure I had plenty of room. I was booked on United Express's Embraer E-Jet narrow-body and even in 1st I had to push in the sides a bit to fit the carrier under the seat. Thank goodness it was soft-sided. Thanks to the design of this carrier my little guy was able to make it both ways with minimal trauma. Well designed, well made. I highly recommend it.

We ended up trying the smaller 18x11 one and it was great! It just barely fits under the Hawaiian Airlines ...

I have both the 18x11 and the 19x12 expandable petsfit carrier because I wasn't sure which would would fit under the seat. We ended up trying the smaller 18x11 one and it was great! It just barely fits under the Hawaiian Airlines seat, so I was glad that we used the smaller one. The 19x12 one would've been too tall. We only ended up using one of the two patio's because it was a little too big of we opened both. I highly recommend getting economy plus seats if you can, it gave us 6 inches more of leg room and it made such a difference on the way back. I posted pictures of the way there when I have NO leg room and the way back with the larger seats.
My little girl is about 19-21 inches long by 12-13 inches tall and 13 pounds. She rode in the top of our carry on luggage but I would recommend getting the Travelon Bag Bungee (http://www.amazon.com/Travelon-Bag-Bungee-Black-Size/dp/B001TR0UZI/ref=sr_1_8?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1465063434&sr=1-8&nodeID=9479199011&keywords=Luggage+strap) to secure your dog to the luggage handle. You can see it one one of my pictures. There is a flap where you can thread/secure the carrier through to handle, but I felt much better with the bungee. It doesn't give very much if you try to squeeze it down, so if you are debating on size, get the 18x11 because one inch did make a difference for us.
