This works pretty well. You will still need to use a brush and spoon for a final "touch-up", but using this gives a great start and really speeds up the ballasting process for long track runs.

Anyone who is serious about their model railroad takes track ballasting very seriously, even thought it's a tedious chore. I'm building another layout and have several ballast gizmos from days gone by. This gadget is pricey but I thought I'd give it a shot.
Pros: It is very adjustable to compensate for the size and depth of the ballast. It lays down a even layer particularly on the shoulders of the roadbed which is always tricky. It does move nicely down the track on real HO wheels ...definitely an improvement over other models.
Cons: Can be towed by a locomotive....seriously, folks? The shut off door is finicky and takes some practice to avoid leaving "piles" and the end of the spread. It needs frequent refilling which, depending on the terrain, is difficult to do while on the rails.
Bottom line: If you are on a budget there is a cheaper version which looks adequate. If you buy this, I suggest you set up a length of track somewhere and practice "off layout". Once you get the hang of it, it is a handy tool which definitely reduces the amount of fuss involved in getting the ballast in the right place. (You'll still need that brush and DON'T use it on turnouts).
