I only bought it for the lenses

I only bought this for the lenses to use in a mod for my HTC Vive, but I did give it a shot on my Samsung S8 before I tore it to pieces. For VR on a cell phone it beats using a google cardboard, but that's setting the bar pretty low. I wish I could give more information on how it performed for its intended purpose, but as a delivery vehicle for a set of replacement lenses, it did great.
Great introduction into VR and all you need if you're mainly into VR Entertainment like movies or sports!

If you own a recent model Samsung Galaxy phone, you must buy one of these. I'm not really into VR games, but I really like the entertainment apps that are available for VR. I love watching Netflix shows and movies on what feels like a movie sized screen. It's also cool to use the NextVR app and watch basketball games in VR. It feels like you are right there courtside and you can really see the true size of the players. Lebron James is a big guy, but he's still skinny...lol. It fits on your head very easily and even works with glasses if you need to wear those to see properly. I recommend picking up one of the Samsung Gear VR controllers to go along with this, as it just makes it easier to navigate the menus without having to use the navigation controls on the side of the headset. I use this with my Galaxy S7 and the visuals are amazing. Highly recommend if you're wanting to try out VR, and don't want to spend the ridiculous amounts of money on an Oculus Rift, PSVR, or HTC Vive! 5 stars!!
Plastic, flimsy, too limited, too early in the development of VR to be a great form of travel entertainment.

A basic, limited, but essentially workable product from Samsung - just don't get sucked into paying Officeworks prices for it, as I bought one for half what they were charging from Amazon. No Aussie electrics required, so the same product can be bought from anywhere.
Firstly, the VR experience is something almost amazing when you first see it, but you soon realise it is all, at this stage, in its absolute infancy. Animation and cgi have yet to be replaced by real entertainment in this medium and the sound quality of the few 'specials' I have tried so far is quite poor, even when using my usually amazing Sennheiser hang-over-ear pieces.
The way my Samsung S7 fits into the VR headset was somewhat problematic. At first it looked too short, as if it could not fit in at all in a way that would be secure. Then I saw (no instructions to tell you) that the way too plastic mounts into which it should just 'click', are actually movable. At first you don't want to push too hard, because it feels like the kind of plastic that will just snap easily if you do. But with as firm a pressure as I dared, the fixture at one end finally moved and I was able to lock my S7 into place. However, once you do that, the cover of the VR no longer fits and you just have the back of your phone exposed while using the headset. The cover also still doesn't fit when you take your phone out, because the fixtures it has to click into are now too short, meaning I would have to move the fixtures every time back in to their original position to fit the cover back, then move them again whenever I want to use my phone. That would certainly end in tears in the very near future, so now I just put the unit back in its box when I am not using it, without fitting the cover back. A basic design fault and surely Samsung should be interested in making something as futuristic for them a bit more robust and easy to use, with some metal, easy to move parts, instead of flimsy feeling plastic you KNOW is going to break.
The biggest issue around the Samsung VR is what you are going to use it for. If you're a gamer, which I definitely am not, you need the full interactive setup, which this is definitely not. If you're a viewer, like me, mostly passive when using it, you will eventually end up disappointed that everything produced specially for it so far is animated or cgi. My main reason for buying it was to watch movies on long flights. Turns out the whole process of downloading special movies only and having to store them on your phone in a special way only, through a very complicated process, and then to have them only work half the time because of lack of compatibility wit the Occulus compulsory software only, meant effectively I wasted my $67 on a product I can really only use easily on expensive, cgi only, 'cartoon' or game style movies. As I said, VR is in its infancy and I would class this Samsung Gear VR the same way as I once classed video cassette machines - great new innovation, but very temporary in a fast moving world and one that needs a LOT more development to become a serious 'essential' for entertainment on the move. One day we will see planes full of people wearing VR headsets to watch their in-flight movies and tv via wifi, but this Samsung Gear VR 'powered by Occulus' has a looooong way to go before it will be THAT Headset and software. I'll give it to my 8 year old granddaughter. I know she will appreciate its VR qualities and not notice the cgi unreality of this virtual reality headest - but maybe I will have to wait, because I will have to give her my S7 phone too, and I'm not ready to part with that yet - although I have to say, for many reasons, my Note 3 was a better all round phone. For me, this Samsung Gear VR will be just another gadget in the passing parade on the way to truly engaging, lightweight and easily usable travel entertainment.
Would buy again => Tech still needs to grow

Great intro into VR.
Works great with my Galaxy S6.
It does drain battery rather quickly, so you should charge your phone first.
One thing is that the amount of content is limited, so don't expect to be able to use it for hours.
Games are kinda Meh, some of the videos and animations are pretty awesome but short.
Also, if you have limited storage, most Apps require quite a bit of storage.
VR tech is cool, this is hot

Without even looking at other reviews on here, I'm certain that they are littered with 'overheating problems'. That's because my s6 edge can last maybe 10 minutes at most before the Gear VR application lags and eventually displays a overheating message. If you think lagging computers and phones are bad, just wait until you're in a virtual world, and your vision suddenly freezes. I'm not sure why they would even market a product that's not able to function without installing a cooling system.
