We had a Sharp Microwave drawer for many years that was similar to this microwave. Although our previous Sharp was well-liked, it had some issues. (It sparked at times as it cooked; and there were other annoyances.) That made us look elsewhere when a replacement was needed. (Our old Sharp burned up when a bowl of mostly oil, processed cheese product caught fire inside...unnoticed. These microwave drawer are all very shallow; and if something flames up, it has a chance of burning out internal controls. Who knew that leaving a processed cheese product in a microwave too long could flame up and destroy a microwave drawer?)
So far, we are thrilled with this purchase. The controls are out in the open and easy to access--which I wanted. Our old Sharp had a handle that visitors always tried to grab and open the drawer with--which was not great for the motor. This Bosch has no handle, which encourages people to look for the "open" and "close" buttons right off the bat. This unit also has a locking mode--since the controls are always visible; so if you have small children in the house who want to keep opening and closing the microwave drawer, you can lock it with a quick combination of buttons until needed.
The drawer slows down just enough as it stops in the "open" or "close" position to keep soup, etc. from sloshing out. That's an improvement over our previous unit.
We love microwave drawers in our island, because you can actually cook in one very easily. With the push of a button, you can open the drawer, then stir a sauce or soup from above before cooking it further. If you fill the drawer with cups of hot chocolate, you can top them all off with marshmallows without taking them out to reach them all. Every corner of the drawer is visible and accessible from above! But microwave drawers are shallow compared to other microwaves; if you heat syrup in a bottle, you have to prop it up on its side to fit. Still, we've had MANY years experience with all kinds of microwaves, and it would be hard to go back to anything besides a drawer.
So far, this Bosch has exceeded our expectations. It has tons of sensing functions that all work extremely well. The drawer opens and closes smoothly and solidly. We haven't noticed hot spots in the way the oven cooks, either, which is important since there is no turntable; dishes or cups don't have to rotate; the drawer bottom is flat and easy to wipe clean--and you can fill it completely from corner to corner if you'd like.
We've only had this Bosch for a month or so now. But so far, we are very happy with it. Our old Sharp may have sparked at times, but it lasted almost ten years before the flames of the processed cheese product killed it; so if this Bosch doesn't last at least as long, we'll let you know.
