This is the first kind of magnetic holder for tools I've ever had, so I didn't know what to expect. It comes with a surprising quantity of supporting hardware, and they went together exactly the way you might expect.

The only disappointment is that the magnets themselves aren't 12-in, but rather the brackets. What this means is that the magnets themselves sit in a c channel of steel and they have their ridiculous printed stickers on it that say 12-in magnetic is if you can't figure that out, and they're extremely hard to get on, put on with some kind of security glue.

The fact that the actual magnetic part is smaller, means that when you put them end to end you have three or four inches that you cannot use. So you might want to take that into consideration, if you have measured your tools and have somehow figured out how much room you need. My next set is going to be 18 in for this reason.

also I noticed there was one tool that I did not feel safe putting on, but everything under that was okay. This is a set of Klein "nines", a kind of plier cutter lineman use, that we've always called nines, I guess because they're almost 9 in long. Anybody in the business knows what they are, but I couldn't tell you a model number or something like that. These things are so tough you can use them as hammers, and because they have good solid weight to them, retailing for 30 to $40 each, they are heavy.

So heavy in fact that they started slipping down off of the magnetic bar and I didn't want to have a big surprise come down on the bench, so everything's smaller than that wasn't a problem. Where they really came into their own was with small things like wiha drivers, and other jewelers style drivers. It was really amazing to have all these tiny drivers up on the magnets where I could see them instead of as they usually are spread out across the working surface, where you have them in order, but only for a few minutes.

Another drawback of these is at least with high-end drivers, like pentalobes hex, etcetera, you do not get to choose which way the tool sits on the magnet.

What I'm trying to say is the writing on the handle of a high-end driver faces in one direction If you go to put right side up or upside down the driver on the magnet with that size or whatever it is pointing out to you and you let go the magnet will decide which way it wants to grab that tool, and in my case always it wanted to point the writing away from me so I couldn't see it. You can't just roll them, it has to do with the polarity of the magnets that they put in there end to end, so you're pretty much stuck unless you want to move the magnets back and forth, but the problem is if you want them to be stored relatively next to each other, virtually none of them will end up with the writing facing out.

So in the case of pentalobe drivers, I have six sizes. I have them organized from smallest to largest, but try as I might to get the size markings on the end of the handles to all face out, it doesn't matter where I put them or how I arrange them, they will not all face out.

so maybe there's a better tool for this out there, I'd love to know if there is, but if you have round driver shafts, the magnets are going to decide which way they're going to face, whereas if you use pliers, needle nose, scissors, small tools that don't have any markings on them and are obvious what they are, you're going to be very happy with the results.

I have a complete set wiha small hand tools, and my hopes were dashed that I'd actually be able to see which ones were which so I could put them back in order when I was done with each one. But even though the design doesn't let you have the tools facing the right way, simply having them off the bench is just a dream for this person who for decades has never had their tools anywhere but rolling around on the floor, messing up the bench, never able to find the right size, or shoved into a drawer.

The good, as a result, clearly outweighs the bad in my particular case.
