This is a great saw for small projects.
Western saws cut on the push portion of the sawing motion. Japanese saws cut on the pull.

There is something about using these Suizan saws a lot of people don't understand. That is the pure enjoyment of using a "non-power tool" to create something beautiful or complex or both. Having 1600 sq ft of power woodworking tools gets the job(s) done fast, but I find using the old school tools and ways for my personal projects to be immensely satisfying. These Japanese saws are sharp, rugged and precise. Buy one, read up on the history and how it is used, then try it out. See if your blood pressure and heart rate don't decrease and a smile begins to invade your face.

I am a hand tool woodworker and I've been using Japanese planes and saw for over thirty years. After many years of re-sharpening my saws, there comes a time of diminishing return and while I have my favorites, the SUIZAN Ryoba Japanese Pull Saw has ranked up there with my best saws. This little saw makes quick, clean work out of general construction and trim projects where getting out a power saw would be overkill or inconvenient. It will crosscut a 2x4 in seconds without blowing sawdust all over the place and is a pleasure to use. Compared to some other Japanese pull saws, I wish the handle had a taper at the bottom to make the pull stroke slightly easier to grip, but it's so sharp that it doesn't take a very firm grip to hold on to the handle anyway. Great little saw and easy to transport after breaking down the blade.
