Ok, admittedly, I'd love a head that didn't stain. To be fair, a lot of the paints used for professional face painting are so highly pigmented that they stain real skin.
At first I really hated this thing. I learned to clean it with a little nail polish remover, the white scrub side of a dish washing sponge and dry baking soda (together) massaging in gentle circles and I can remove most of the color. It's totally abusive to the practice head, but it works fairly well.
Fast forward dozens of designs later and I'm actually kind of fond of it because I know my skills are greatly improving. I take it, and my paints and brushes with me when I go out of town just in case I get the urge to try a new design.
I am a tactile person, so I absolutely know that practice boards would never work for me. I looked into more expensive heads but why? They're going to stain too. There doesn't seem to be a point.
So after 30 plus designs I have to say I couldn't succeed without this ugly thing. And my grandsons think it's fabulous and scary, so that's an added bonus!
UPDATE: 8/2/19
Ok. At some point I couldn't see my designs anymore but the other heads on the market aren't perfect for face paint either. So instead of letting her become "˜Barb' in our Stranger Things Halloween display I tried painting her with latex skin colored paint.
That did it! I now clean the head and paint it whenever it becomes even a little stained. Also, this allows me to paint Barb a darker skin shade when I want to optimize the designs and know what works best on multiple skin tones...
I have done probably 100+ face paint designs on it since I started painting over the stains. I just worked my first festival yesterday, over 5 hours of solid painting a very long list of people. I could NOT have done this without "˜Barb'!!!
UPDATE 10/30/19
Bought Barb 2.0, and 3.0 so that I don't have to race from painting to wash a design, dry, re-apply base right away. I can now paint 3 designs before I have to start washing. Also Barb 2.0 and 3.0 got 6 coats of skin colored paint right out of the box! Very happy with this system.
Update 12/20/20
I now have 5 Barbs. I finally DID buy one of those practice boards with 6 faces on it. I sometimes use it to try a few quick new designs but I always move over to the Barbs if I like the design on a board. I rarely use the board to be fair. Most of the time the design on a board takes 4-5 tries on a Barb to get perfect. Also, I have started saving favorite perfect designs to try and get clusters of similar designs together. They take up space but I am a different kind of face painter because of the Barbs. It's definitely worth it.
