Good book stand for large, heavy law textbooks
Madeline✓ Verified PurchaseSeptember 7, 2023
I like this book stand and it holds my 1,000 page, heavy law textbooks well. It is somewhat unstable if I'm trying to highlight or underline something but it does what it should, and it's so much better than straining my neck down to read. The support in the back does not "stick" to the desk so if you push on the stand it will slide back instead of staying in place. I have the book stand all the way to the wall so it stays put, but the support has left black/gray marks on my wall from shifting around. I'm sure I can fix the stand from sliding around somehow, but be aware the stand will not stay in place if you want to highlight or write in the book if you don't have something behind it. I like the aesthetic too as my desk is also bamboo and it looks good on my desk. The page holders were tight at the beginning and left marks on my pages, but loosened up after awhile.

However, I did not like the positioning of the page holders as they were often unable to extend over 500/600 pages. I fixed this problem by unscrewing the two page holders and moving them to the center of the ledge so now the page holders sit on the bottom margin of the pages (versus the right/left margins as before) and can now hold open ~800 pages. If you want to do the same, just unscrew the screws, take a drill with a small (1/8") drill bit and drill two holes into the center of the ledge about an inch from each side of the little indent (make sure you go deep enough otherwise it'll be hard to screw the screws in) and screw the page holders back in.
Perfect for heavy law casebooks!

I bought this stand to save my neck when reading for law school. I needed a sturdy book stand that could handle heavy casebooks that can contain ~2,000 pages, but could also fit in a backpack easily. This stand performs admirably!

I bought a larger size to handle my casebooks. The lip is large enough that the thick books stay on without slipping off, and the stand is sturdy enough to hold them up easily. It's thin and light enough to fit in my backpack or leave on a book shelf or in a locker with no issues. The back has a pretty vertical angle even on the shallowest setting "“ which I prefer "“ but don't expect to use the stand to lay the book at only a 30Ëš angle etc. if that's what you're looking for. The bottom is plastic which means there is little noise when sliding this around on a desk, which is great for studying in a silent library.

I don't really use the metal arms to keep the pages open, but when I have they worked fine. They aren't quite arched enough to move on and off of pages in my thickest books without (nearly) damaging the bottom edge of the paper, but for all but the thickest books they are fine. The metal is also flimsy enough that you could probably bend them to a better angle if needed. The arms have rubber tips at the end for grip that work pretty well. Because they create pressure by bending the metal of the arms, there can be some slippage or "settling" before the pages reach a position that the arms will hold them in place. (I found this usually only happens at the very beginning or very end of new, very thick books that haven't been broken in yet "“ like the first/last ~40 pages of a new textbook). Again, this hasn't been an issue for me at all (since the rubber tips prevent damage to the pages when this happens), but something to be aware of.

My one issue with the stand is that part of the actual standing mechanism flops around when it is folded up for storage. There is a metal bar that fits into the plastic bottom to hold up the back of the stand. While the plastic bottom seems to (magnetically?) stay attached to the back when the stand is folded up, the metal bar can flop around. I found this to be annoying when trying to fit this stand in my backpack or locker, but I solved it by sticking some velcro to the bar and the back of the stand.

Overall I would highly recommend this stand.
Stable. Wide.

Stable for books, journals, cookbooks and manuals. Think a large rubber band to hold reading materials open.
