This machine develops knots in the auger cable, and these knots can only be untangled by dissembling the machine.

The RIGID 5508 Power Clear Drain Cleaner appears to be well designed. Too bad that the appearance does not live up to the performance. The user, you, is instructed to advance the auger by squeezing the frontal part of a holder that the auger cable passes through, and to remove the auger by squeezing the backward part of that same holder. The motor and the drum that the auger cable is supposed to wind upon both spin in one direction during these advancing and retrieving operations. Sounds good, and works until the tip of the auger encounters some resistance that applies torque to the tip of the auger. At these times, the cable quickly turns itself into a bunch of knots, both inside the pipe being cleaned and within the rewinding drum, which is even worse. As a Professional Mechanical Engineer, I feel that the tendency of the machine to develop cable knots within the rewinding drum is a fundamental design flaw.
I recommend against the purchase of this machine.
