The REAL version of this works, and works great. It is put together really well, and has a great finish that matches the white outlets. I would imagine the problems people are having is due to lots of fake/repros of the original.

**BEWARE of FAKE versions of this cover plate. If your outlet does not come in a SnapPower plastic clamshell with SnapPower logo and UL listings on back of plate, you have a FAKE. The fake comes in a plastic bag with a tiny wood screw and a single printed piece of paper with no directions, just descriptions of the plate itself. Also, the FAKE has the light sensor on the right, SnapPower is on the left. The FAKES do not sit flush with the wall, have flimsy wings with no copper conductors and are noticeably off white. 1. Good substitute for a nightlight.
2. Doesn't take up a socket.
3. Installs in less than a minute. If you can use a screwdriver at all, just DIY.

CON
1. The dimmer sensor doesn't work unless you light it up directly with a flashlight.
(Tested this on two of them.) Our hall lights didn't make it dim even a smidgen.

2. Make sure the electrical box for your socket is set even or slightly behind the drywall. Otherwise the gadget will not be flush with the wall.

3. The lights are a VERY harsh light. If you get up in the middle of the night, they WILL hurt dark-adapted eyes.
FYI: My wife fixed this glitch by "painting" over the lights with a red sharpie pen, creating a nice warm glow and dimming the output down from "Yipe!" to "Reasonable."

Overall, I'll get more of them when they get a sensor that shuts the lights off when ordinary room lights are on. I'd also like to see some way to adjust the brightness down to my chosen level. Getting warmer color LEDs (or putting filters over the lights to create one) would be a big bonus selling point.

Innovative and useful idea for subdued lighting. The light shines down so it does not destroy your night vision completely These lights work great to show the way to the bathroom for guests that are not familiar with the layout of our home. Super easy to install without turning the power off. It takes only a single screw to remove the old outlet cover and upgrade. One detail I hope they improve is this: I would like to be able to dim them and/or change the color. Ideally I would do this with a smart phone or computer and obviously they would have to cost more. I will definitely be buying more of these handy little gadgets.

My husband and I decided to order just 2 cover plates to see how we liked them, and if we did, we'd buy more later. After our Amazon order arrived, and my husband installed the 2 coverplates, we were very pleased with how much light they emitted. One thing I should mention--my husband said the cover plates didn't totally fit flush with the wall, but it wasn't too noticeable. Since we liked them, we decided to order more, but much to our dismay, they were priced much higher than the original offering. This was very disappointing because we wanted to order at least 10 more. So we won't be ordering any additional plates unless the price goes down.

I do not understand the negativity for this outlet. It is very easy to install, It frees up the outlet to use as you would without a nightlight plugged in. It also provides a nightlight that gives off a nice LED light. If it is in a dark area the light will stay on until sunlight or a light in the area of the outlet is turned on. It works just like any other nightlight, but does not take up any space. I definitely recommend the outlet. When the price goes down a little I will buy more.
