The Ballpoint and Rollerball Montblanc Classique Meisterstuck Pens do indeed have different size cartridges for each style in this line.
FYI - The Classique Rollerball has four cartridge size options depending on the style; regular, small, legrand, or capless.
The Classique Ballpoint cartridges come in only regular and small sizes, which again can only fit specific styles.
The Ballpoints and Rollerball Classique Meisterstuck Pens do have different applications:
How to Use: The Classique Ballpoint requires slight pressure when writing because it contains ink paste. This pen is ideal for longer writing times and thus, the ink will last longer than a Rollerball if you were to use them for the same application. You can get more than 150 pages of writing from the Ballpoint on the M cartridge, and more than 200 on the F cartridge. You have the options of B (broad) M (medium) or F (fine) point. The writing is smooth and reliable. The Ballpoint ink cartridges come in various colors depending on the size.
The Rollerball is not meant for longer writing times. It requires little pressure and can scratch if you apply too much. It uses liquid ink and only holds enough for approximately 50 pages +/- 10 using F. If you use M, it is less. This pen is ideal for signatures, short notes etc. The writing is elegant, clean, and pristine. The cartridges come in M (medium) or F (fine) point. There are various ink color options and differ depending on size.

If you have a $500 pen, you want to go with the original refill. The quality is superb. Amazon is at the moment the only place to get the purple refills, the are out of stock at Montblanc US.

It's Montblanc, so you know it's not going to be cheap. That being said, the color is great and the flow is thick and incredibly smooth. Make sure you are buying the correct refill for your pen... this is ballpoint ink. NOT rollerball. And be aware that not all knockoff pens (if that's what you're trying to put this into) fit genuine Montblanc refills.
