Honest review from a once-hardcore gamer
Jon ANovember 10, 2017
Alright, I played all the Call of Duty games pretty religiously since COD4:Modern Warfare. I loved the first 2 Modern Warfare games and thought they were the best to date. Still love World at War, Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 1. MP on ghosts I thought was ok and I did not care for Black Ops 3 or Infinite Warfare. Just so you know where I stand on the others because everyone's got their favorites.

With WW2, the multiplayer felt weird at first but it's growing on me. Of course there were server issues right away but I'm not gonna hop on here and give it 1 star when I know that just happens with a new release. People need to get a life if it's stressing them out that bad. I haven't had any issues in days, other than the refresh rate on MP from time to time. I'm sure it'll get worked out. The class setup is different as far as setting your perks and whatnot. The loadouts are more like Battlefield where you gave a run and gun class, sniper class, assault class etc. And as you progress in those classes, you unlock certain perks like reloading while sprinting, etc that don't need to be turned on- you're just better on every round and you don't need to select those for them to work- I like that. So far it seems fun and balanced. I maybe have 15 hours in and so far, so good.

The Zombies mode is awesome. I really like how they changed this up. You can upgrade guns in the lobby that you can buy off the wall, so when you go to buy your M1A1, or Type 100, etc that they come equipped with an extended magazine, rapid fire, a grip, etc. And you can choose if you start out with a pistol, shotgun, sniper rifle or assault rifle, although those options are limited. When you upgrade a gun, if you get it from the mystery box, that gun will be upgraded, so that's pretty sweet. There's a number of different zombies to keep it fresh and you can actually create classes to play zombies with certain powerups like camouflage or a number of other ones, though I've only used camoflague because it's awesome.

All in all, the game is definetly worth at least a rental to see if you want to buy it. I'm happy I bought it. I'm not the hardcore gamer I was but I think it's fun and don't understand why it's suffering such poor reviews. You can't please everybody, and everytime a Call of Duty game comes out, people's hopes get high and they expect it to be a life changing experience. It's just fun and that's good enough for me. Your mileage may vary.
Game feels unfinished. Nothing to see here

This is mostly a multiplayer review. I played every COD up until ghosts, then I began skipping any game not made by treyarch after the other developers made the disasters that were MW3 and Ghosts. Meaning I skipped advanced warfare and infinite warfare b/c past experience told me this developers would make them into a sh**tshow of a game. I was back for black ops 3 which as usual treyarch hit out of the park. It being sledgehammers year, totally planned to skip whatever they planned to release. That was until I heard they planned to go back to WW2, so I changed my mind and decided to try it out.

So i made it my goal to make it through 1 prestige so I could get an honest feel for the multiplayer, class creation system if you can even call it that, and all the perks (basic trainings). Those last 5 levels were such a chore, I couldn't wait to be done with this game and never touch it again. For a dozen different reasons.

The most glaring, they destroyed the create a class system. Just when I think you couldn't do something dumber than what infinity ward did with the nonsense create a soldier system, Sledgehammer said "hold my beer".

So to create a class you pick one of 5 divisions. Each division has a unique skill, and 4 perks that unlock by ranking up the division. For instance the Airborne Division skill is a suppressor for smgs, and the perks you unlock are sprint faster, climb over stuff faster, sprint longer. All of these perks are predetermined for you. You can choose 1 extra perk out of 20 or so options called a basic training. So if you want to have a rocket launcher you have to pick the only perk u get for that, or reload faster while sprinting theres a perk for that. have a primary weapon as a secondary etc. Theres maybe 4 or 5 useful ones, most are worthless.

This whole system makes the game incredibly boring and limiting. Want to stay off radar with ghost. you have to pick the sniper division, but guess what, the suppressor is only on smgs if u pick the airborne division. Want a suppressor on an assault rifle. Cant happen. want ghost and a suppressed smg, can't happen. Want flak jacket and ghost, want to run faster and have flak jacket, sorry can't be done. This incredibly limiting 5 division system, with all of the perks predetermined for you is the worst thing about this game. The pick 10 system was perfect, it allowed for an infinite number of different class setups, this game makes 5 classes for you, and lets you pick one minimally useful perk yourself.

Killstreaks suck horribly. Its 500 points to get a UAV and up from there. So a minimum of a 5 killstreak to get a uav. In domination simce kills are now 50 points for some reason after 20 cods where it was 100 points, its a ridiculous 10 kill streak to just get a uav. You rarely see anything above the glide bomb which is 650 points. B/c even the higher ones just aren't worth it. They basically removed them from the game making them so many points, and making them mostly useless even when people get them.

These issues alone feels like it strips the game of content but wait there more. In general I feel like this game is unfinished. Theres only 9 maps. and 3 more that are specific to war which feels like an entirely different game than the standard multiplayer so those don't really even count. These 9 maps are some of the most bland boring maps I think I've ever played in a COD game. None of them are very big, there seems to be a lack of cover or general power positions anywhere. It feels like we are all dropped in a parking lot with a few shipping containers and go at it. Every map feels like its a first draft of a map that they created to get the general layout, and forgot to come back and add any detail at all to finish it. Also why does every single map have to be a rubble town that is brown and grey, wheres the imagination.

Next is the lack of weapons. Why is there only like 15 weapons. All the smgs are basically the same. Half the assault rifles feel the same as well, SVT, garand, carbine all semi auto weapons that are 2 or 3 shot kill, with near identical range, minimal change in fire rate. No secondaries other than 3 pistols and a shovel. There are 2 rocket launchers that require the only perk slot to even carry one. The equipment slots are useless. Nobody uses any equipment other than smoke sometimes because nothing works but the grenades, and boy do the grenades work. I was using a flashbang until about halfway through until I realized they stun me worse than the other team. Grenades are ridiculous, if you are anywhere near one your done, the grenade indicator comes up only after its too late. If you see that indicator you are dead. Since the pick 10 system is gone everyone has a grenade on and just chucks them on spawn at the nearest objective. They are powerful and it works so why not. You will die 3-5 times by random grenade in any gametype.

Where is the rest of the content. The answer to that, coming in DLC and micro transactions. The micro transactions are everywhere, supply drop this, armory credit that. You can bet half the weapons they would normally release in a game like this sledgehammer held back to put in the supply drops. Which are close to impossible to earn by just playing. Most of the ones I have are for doing daily challenges. However if you want to just play and get supply drops, and not have to run around and stab five people with a shovel for some challenge good luck with that. The only other way you get them is randomly after a game, someone in the lobby gets one. In Black ops 3 you earned crypto keys at a pretty decent rate by just playing. I haven't used any supply drops and have a total of 15. Thats right, 15 in 55 levels. The solution to that, you can bet your A$$ you are going to be able to pay cash for supply drops, to have a 0.0005% chance to get the content they should've released anyway, in a pay to play slot machine built into your COD game.

Lastly the headquarters and menus are ridiculous and confusing. Ive put 20 hours in the multiplayer and I still fumble around the menus of this game. The headquarters was supposed to be some grand social experiment, but its been bugging out the game for a week so they shut it down to a solo experience. Even when it works nobody goes in there together, theres no point. Again change for the worse for the sake of change. Why do games take forever to get into, where is the normal menu lobby with everyones tag in a list. I think because of this system bugging the game out. I would say 70% of the games I play don't make it back into the lobby after the game. While trying to grind out the last few levels to get this dreadful experience over with I was experimenting with each game type to see where I earned the most xp per min. But I couldn't even make it to the screen that showed what xp I earned, what I unlocked etc. Just booted out from the final scoreboard back to the headquarters half the time with some disconnected from host error.

This is just the tip of the iceberg with this game. I could go on but you get the point. Just avoid this game, or get it for cheap and play the campaign. I haven't tried zombies, maybe its good who knows. Just don't get it for the multiplayer, theres nothing ot see here. See you in Black ops 4

EDIT 11-18-17:

Game lost another star and I recommended completely avoiding. Finished the campaign, it was very cinematic but it was the most on rails I think the cod campaign has ever been. very little room to do anything other than the scripted events they have for you. Game is filled with sneaking around parts with no gun at all, sneaking dragging someone, sneaking with a little girl, ughhhh. The healthpack thing is stupid. I beat it on veteran and it wasn't very hard but there was so much scripted nonsense i finished it and felt like i may have actually killed 100 enemies in the whole campaign. which is very short.

Multiplayer is still broken as well. Constant black screens, disconnects, freezing, stuck on screens while in a party where i can't change my weapon attachments. Ridiculous for a Triple A title, and COD. waste of money. Also I just noticed how god awful the spawns are in every game type. Even in domination, team deathmatch, kill confirmed, the spawns never flip. Its not possible in domination, you will always spawn on your side no matter what until the next round. Its close to impossible in TDM and KC as well. meaning you will spawn in the same exact spot, the entire match, run through the same limited pathways, over and over again until the match is over. You can play entire matches and not see the other half of the map even if you wanted to. B/b that is where the enemy will spawn over and over. die once, back to your spawn way on the opposite side and repeat. Its horrible. Avoid this game at all costs
Fun factor: but wait for sale

IGNORE ANY REVIEW WITH THE PHRASE "boots on the ground" as they're a product of brainwashing from activision's pr talk & cant think for themselves. This game is fun but not worth $60 and all that other season pass bs they're trying to sell already.

1) Story: if you're interested in buying just for a nostalgic story, wait for a sale. This is a generic story with generic characters. There's some really intense action moments as always but I can't justify a $60 purchase just for 7 hours of veteran difficulty gameplay. It is definitely fun but very short lived in my opinion. They had a big opportunity to make something memorable and it just doesn't deliver. The story seems to lose its identity at some points where you aren't really sure why you're there or what your mission is exactly.

2) multiplayer: this is nothing new. absolutely nothing to add value to the multiplayer experience. Headquarters is really too hyped and glorified; I don't understand it; they just took the random card drop system, challenges, and daily objectives from black ops 3 and turned it into it's own lobby. There is no practical use of it and the fact people are pushing it as a selling point is crazy. You will have fun with the new modes for maybe a week and then stop playing it if none of your friends have the game. It gets more frustrating than fun. Overall: the same annoyances as every other call of duty is still there (bad spawns, quick scope mania, 1 single over used smg that kills too quickly, etc).... but there's also still a short lived fun factor to it and that's all that matters I guess? I would recommend watching some gameplay on YouTube first.

3) zombies: zombies is refreshing but seriously since when did zombies have to become the make or break for purchasing a call of duty game. This is no doubt a zombie mode which went back to its origin of being "scary" and if it's your type of thing then kudos to you. Personally tho, I only play zombies when my friends are online.

Wait for a sale and force Activision to innovate their games with your wallet. Don't buy because of the nostalgic hype and don't buy a $50 season pass.
Zombies kinda saved the day

Only good part so far is a little bit of the campaign and the zombies mode, the main zombies map is so big, I get lost pretty quick, so I say zombies is a success. Online however, is atrocious, riddled with bugs and hit detection are horrible, if you can even manage to get on with the servers being so bad, took about 4 tried throughout the day to get on via xbox one. The lag is real online for sure, I have fiber optic and it's still laggy as heck. Wish zombies was a separate purchase for say like $20, I'd rate it 5/5.
