This is an excellent quality, professional set. The optics are top notch. Everything is clear and easily focused even when I'm holding in the ear of one of my squirmy children. The view is significantly larger than the home use set we've been using. It's much easier to view the eardrum and check for signs of bulging and infection (a problem so common in our family during allergy season that I've taken to keeping an eye on the kids ears myself rather than constantly take up the doctors time just to check).

What I like about this set is the rechargeable battery. It simply plugs into an outlet. It can also be used with batteries which is helpful for times when I need to use it right away but I haven't used it in awhile and it needs to be charged. The handle does need a long time to charge. That said, it holds the charge for quite awhile. I've been using all week and have yet to have to recharge it.

Keep in mind that unlike the home use sets this set will not provide instructions on what to look for. This information is available online as both pictures as well as videos.

Premium = Lithium Ion battery + two ophthalmoscopes
Enhanced = NiCad battery + two ophthalmoscopes
Standard = NiCad battery + one ophthalmoscope (the Coaxial Ophthalmoscope, not the PanOptic Ophthalmoscope)

For the NiCad models, you can swap out the included battery, and stick in 2 C-cell batteries with a converter ring (included), otherwise it takes hours to charge.

Both models have a removable charger which sticks into an outlet, hanging out of the wall.

The NiCad handle is much heavier and heftier; and only the NiCad has the c-battery option.

Either the premium or the enhanced are great options for medical or veterinary students, or home users. e.g. to check your kids ear infection progression/severity, or your retinas. The manuals are lousy. They expect you to know how to use the tools.

We have other Welch Allyn products: a thermometer and blood pressure monitor. It started with not finding an accurate thermometer, cheap ones just don't work. Plus we see Welch Allyn products every time we visit the doctor. We decided to get this because my wife is an SLP and occasionally needs to check her patients. And it's a great way to learn more about health and our body.

This comes with an coaxial and panoptic ophthalmoscopes for the eyes and macroview otoscope for inspecting the ears. Plus a rechargeable battery in the handle and a zippered case that holds everything. All high quality products, very well made and constructed.

While you would expect a professional to know how to use these tools, specific use can vary by manufacture. Welch Allyn makes great instruments but they tend to skimp on the manuals. Except for the coaxial ophthalmoscope which comes with a full color manual, the rest are black and white sheets of paper in several languages. It took me a while to figure out how to turn on the battery handle which you push the green button down and twist the black dial. There's not a lot of additional information online. I did figure out how to make it work just could have taken less effort with better materials.

For this set the top of the handle/battery compartment screws off and reveals two prongs. You just insert the entire unit into an outlet. It must be charged 16 hours before first use. There is no charging LED or indicator. You can also remove the rechargeable battery and use two C cell alkaline batteries (but don't try to charge it!).

These are professional tools that work very well and solidly built. And if you're a student you might as well invest in your equipment now.

If you are a medical student , medical professional, or medical educator, chances are that you will be required to get a set similar to this set. With a rechargeable handle, it is easy to take the handle, do your scoping and return it for charging. You can either charge through a normal 110 outlet or converted to use C cell batteries. The enhanced diagnostic set includes a panoptic and traditional coaxial ophthalmoscopes and a macro view otoscope. You can easily check eyes or ears. For the eyes, the panoptic view gives you a 5x larger. For ears, the macro view otoscope gives you two times magnification. You also get LED lighting, rather than halogen for better clarity.
