Unexpected color and smell, unlike marshmallow root I've used before

I just opened the bag today and the color was not what I was expecting. The color of marshmallow root is normally just what you see on the packaging - a light beige color. The color of the product is much darker, similar to the color of cinnamon (see picture below) and it has a funny smell, reminds me a bit of raisins - not at all like marshmallow root I've used before. I'm wondering if this is marshmallow root at all and I'm a little wary of using it. Maybe it is roasted? The supplement information label says "Organic marshmallow extract 5:1", so maybe that has something to do with it. It also says that there are no other ingredients on the label. Maybe there is marshmallow extract added to the powdered marshmallow root?
