In my opinion and the uses I intended to use this for, i find it better that a windbreaker style waterproof jacket since you are making sure it covers you and your backpack or camera bag. Even during a windy day, you can use some paracord in the grommets to tie it and avoid it flapping around

As a backpacker I prefer ponchos that I can throw over myself and my pack to trying to cover my body with a rain jacket and my pack with a pack cover. I still use a pack cover under the poncho but taking a rain jacket on and off is a huge pain when you're wearing a pack and the rain jacket doesn't cover your hips or thighs and it doesn't breathe as well. This poncho is definitely higher quality than those I've used in the past. I've mostly thought of ponchos as 1 or 2 trip items as they rip and lose their water proofing over time. This one feels sturdier, less likely to rip and is larger so can cover more (but is a little bulkier as a result). Used it in a recent 5-day pack in the Whites with my daughter. We had non stop rain for 1.5 days. This made it through more than half of the first day of say before starting to let some moisture through (inevitable"”nothing is truly water proof unless you're going to wear rubber!) but even then it kept the water flowing off me making the long rain bearable. Some people complain about sizing. It is bigger than others I've had but I liked that, given the pack and I'm 5'11" (but skinny). Also, some complain about the hood. I wore a baseball cap underneath and that gave shape to the hood and the peak on the hood largely covered the brim of the hat so it worked out really well.

We bought these for a football tailgate. They did a great job keeping our group dry as it rained a good part of the day. The pros:
1. Great arm coverage. These ponchos are longer in the arms than most
2. Liked the pocket in front however note there is no way to securely close the pocket. It is just a pocket with a flap
3. Our group varied in height from 5'4" to 6'6" so they are a little big for shorter people and a little short for taller people and perfect for the 5'8" to 6'2 people. Still worked well overall for everyone!
4. The back is longer than the front so this poncho would work well with backpack on
5. The ponchos come in a nice cinch bag for easy carrying and packing. Also after drying, we rolled them up and placed in bag for easy storage
6. The hood worked well and opening was large enough to fit easily over head
The cons:

Only one"¦There are snaps on the sides which are great to allow air flow but some of the snaps are too close to the edge of the fabric and I wonder over time if the fabric will rip when opening and closing snaps. One of the ponchos did have one snap that ripped out of fabric immediately but all others held for that day

I bought a few of these ponchos for me and my husband to take to WDW. It rained the entire day, and while I ended up not using mine, my Father in Law did. They both loved their poncho! Large enough they were covered, but still super lightweight. They were very happy with the quality, and loved the toggle at the hood feature. FIL commented several times during the day how nice it was, the quality, and when I told him how much I bought them for, impressed again. My husband wants to keep a poncho with him all the time now, for "just in case."
