Once you get about halfway to it's extended length it becomes quite a bit useless. The ends are also plastic and not rubber so the tension has to be extremely tight for it to remain in place.

These were exactly as described. As with most tension bars, how well they work depends on the user and how much weight is put on them. The trick is to open it as wide as the opening it is going to be placed in (it should be tight enough that it is slightly difficult to move it into the exact position) then twist it to tighten it even more.
