Key features
- •AUTOMATIC WI-FI PROTECTION: Shield every connection with military-grade, 256-bit AES encryption.
- •GLOBAL COVERAGE: Always have a server nearby in over 190 countries.
- •NO ACTIVITY LOGS: HMA VPN doesn't log your IP address or what you do online.
- •SPEED, WHEREVER YOU ARE: find the fastest connection no matter where you are.
- •PROTECTION, ON ALL YOUR DEVICES: Install HMA software on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux or Router.
- •Smart Kill SwitchA Kill Switch makes sure no data leaks when your connection to a VPN server drops. And on Windows, you can customize it to activate for your whole system or on an app-by-app basis. You can also designate apps to automatically launch HMA whenever you start them up.
- •Split-TunnelingMost VPNs are an all-or-nothing affair: either all your applications and browsing are encrypted, or they’re not. Not with Split-Tunneling: you can choose which applications go through HMA VPN, while everything else connects to the web normally. So you can stream movies from another country while still accessing your local e-shop.
- •IP ShuffleSupercharge your online anonymity. IP Shuffle randomizes your IP addresses anywhere from every 10 minutes to up to once a day — you choose. Trackers won’t be able to keep up as you jump from IP address to IP address in any of our 290+ locations.
- •Leak protectionHMA VPN software includes built-in protection against IPv4, IPv6, and other DNS leaks. We use our own no log HMA DNS servers to handle all your DNS requests, which keeps you private and encrypted, and protects you from dangerous malware and phishing sites.
- •Military-grade encryptionHMA VPN uses only the highest encryption standard: 256-bit AES. On Windows and Android, we implement it with the OpenVPN protocol in Galois Counter Mode (AES-256-GCM), with 4096-bit RSA keys for handshakes, authenticated with SHA256. On Mac and iOS, we implement it with IKEv2/IPsec, built atop Apple’s own stack, to ensure the best compatibility.
- •Automatic connection rulesYou shouldn’t have to fiddle with a VPN every time you want to stay secure on a new network. With HMA, you can choose whether wired, Wi-Fi, or mobile networks trigger the VPN to start automatically — and which networks to trust and ignore.
- •Fully encrypted serversAll HMA servers are protected with the same unbreakable 256-bit encryption used by our protocols. It doesn’t matter where one of our servers is located: whether it’s hackers, thieves, the server custodian, or just law enforcement — no one is getting access.
- •DDoS protectionWe don’t stop at shielding the contents of our servers. The servers themselves are strengthened against DDOS attacks, providing you with robust protection against any attackers trying to take you off the web.
- •Access to the worldWith servers in 290 locations spread across 190 countries, HMA brings the world to your fingertips. With such comprehensive coverage, there’s hardly any content you won’t be able to access, and no block that can get in your way.
- •P2P-optimized serversWhen you need to move files in bulk, nothing beats a good torrent. But using P2P technologies can leave you exposed. Our special P2P servers will mask your IP address while keeping any impact on your speeds at a minimum.
- •EverywhereWindows or Mac. Android or iPhone. Linux or iPad. No matter what you’ve got, there’s a version of HMA software you can use to stay private and secure. And if having 5 devices connected at once isn’t enough for you, just add HMA to your router, and cover everything connected to it, all at once.
- •Lightning ConnectHMA takes the guesswork out of picking the fastest server: just use Lightning Connect to instantly get access to the best online experience. Want to connect to somewhere specific? HMA can still find the fastest available server in that location for you automatically, so you don’t have to go hunting.
- •Faster serversWe’re no slouches when it comes to our infrastructure. Instead of going for some arbitrary high number of servers, we’d rather focus on quality. All of our core data centers have servers capable of 20 Gbps throughput, and most of our other locations have servers with 10 Gbps throughout.
- •Speed TestDon’t just take our word for it: on Windows and Mac, you can test the speed of our network yourself, and select the location that works best for you. Works great for finding a specific P2P or streaming-optimized server.
- •A 24/7 support team with fansSeriously. Our support team isn’t just world-famous. They’re the heart of HMA. Find out for yourself why everyone loves them — and why you will, too.

HMA Pro VPN is geared toward mainstream users and is very easy to setup and install. Simply visit their website (the URL and activation code are both on the key card) and enter an email, create a password and enter the activation key. After completing a very brief registration, a confirmation email will arrive shortly afterward with a download link for the program. Click the link, download the program and sign in. That's all that's required to get started. HMA has nearly 900 servers worldwide providing plenty of connection options. Over half of these are virtual servers, which some users find unappealing. Among the virtual machines are locally based servers with foreign IP's. For example, you can connect with a German IP from a server physically located in New York. This provides the benefits of an foreign IP without the slowdown. Encryption strength is AES-256.
Performance isn't bad. Although speed tests and downloads indicate my speed is halved in both directions with the VPN active, the difference is really only noticeable immediately after starting the VPN. After a few minutes of browsing, it becomes virtually unnoticeable for the most part. Downloads are obviously a little more noticeable but that's also pretty much par for the course with any VPN. Connecting to servers in other countries has a much more noticeable impact on browsing speeds. It's best to use a local server with a foreign IP for the country you wish to connect to if one is available.
HMA VPN has three modes for connecting:
- Instant: Single click operation that connects users to the fastest nearby VPN server.
- Location: Allows users to choose from numerous worldwide servers or a foreign IP on a local server. It's good for bypassing geographical restrictions. You can also choose streaming or peer to peer servers to bypass proxy blocks. Any selections can be saved as favorites.
- Freedom: This is for users in nations that restrict or censor web access. It connects to a server in the nearest free speech country.
HMA's simple (v4) interface is easy and intuitive to use and requires no advanced configurations to begin using the VPN. It's very user-friendly and is accessible to pretty much anyone. HMA doesn't provide as much anonymity as some other VPN clients but it's adequate for most casual uses. It can be installed on unlimited devices and used simultaneously on up to five devices at one time. It isn't compatible with Firestick or FireTV.
The biggest issue many VPN users have with HMA is the fact that they collect and retain certain user data for up to 90 days. They say they don't track or collect history of websites visited but their logging policy states that they can retain data beyond 90 days if they are notified of or discover that someone is in violation of their end user agreement. The end user agreement is very broad and includes language that could potentially affect any users who knowingly or unknowingly violate any intellectual property rights.

Fast, works as intended. Good user support available. Watch for sales.

I've used HMA as a VPN provider for 3 years, and am satisfied with the service: many locations to choose from, doesn't slow network speed (much), and I don't have the dropped connections that other reviewers mention. I prefer the older Windows client (v2.8.24.0, which is still available for download) because it gives greater control for those technically inclined, and use the Android app on my phone and tablet when I'm away from my home wireless router.
One other comment regarding their support: I bought the boxed version from Amazon (which is a code only, no disc; kind of a waste to ship it) because it was below MSRP, then entered the code at hidemyass-dot-com before my current subscription ran out, (incorrectly) assuming the new year would tack onto my current subscription. Instead, I lost the 7 days of overlap. I used their "request help" page to ask if I could get back the week. One day later, a support person emailed me to say the overlap had been credited, as I'd requested.
I plan to stay a customer for the long term, but will be shopping for the best renewal price once a year. Amazon was best this year, but I'd found lower prices last year.

DD-WRT.COM router flash required!!
William Pester✓ Verified Purchase•June 28, 2023
Purchased the product a few years ago, installed, and kept connecting, and kicking me off. Took weeks to figure out you have to go to DD-WRT.com, find the flash software for your router model and flash the mem-chip yourself. HMA does not tell you how to flash your router, or even that you will need to flash the software in your cheep router for their product to work. HMA will sell you a pre-flashed router for hi-$. ALL routers have to be configured to work on a VPN. Flashed my $35.00 Netgear, worked fine since.
Works well

I almost gave this three stars for the simple reason that the Mac software they had me download for this did not work, it wouldn't even draw a UI on the screen. I was forced into using OpenVPN"¦ but actually OpenVPN is pretty decent. Still, though, I feel like I needed to rely more on my computer skills than I should have had to in order to get this running.
Having said that, I did find the servers were plentiful and generally behaved well. I mostly used this service on my iPhone and I don't think that could have gone any better"¦ once I found the HMA app. (I think Apple's not too keen on the name of this product, thus making it a bit harder to find.).
If you're new to VPNs you'll find that some services, like Netflix for example, do not work. This is not the fault of the VPN, it's an intentional decision made by Netflix to not support it. One of the reasons I like the iPhone app (as well as OpenVPN) is it's pretty easy to temporarily disconnect from their VPN server if a particular web page misbehaves. Also their tech support was quite responsive.

Easy to set up and use VPN with decent logging policy
J. Peplinski✓ Verified Purchase•May 31, 2023
I hadn't used a VPN before HMA, but was basically aware of how they functioned and what they do. The most important thing to most in the market for a VPN is their logging policy. HMA's logging policy basically states they don't store details of, or monitor, the resources (including websites) you connect to or any of the data sent or received over the network, when using the service. They do collect username, time spent, amount of data sent over, your IP address & the IP address of the server used. It also says they keep this for 30 days and delete, unless there's evidence it was used in breach of the terms of service or evidence of attempts to defraud them. With all that said, it will be up to you to decide whether you trust that and are comfortable with it.
As for actual usage, I appreciated how lightweight of an app it is. It only has a few modes and little to configure, so it may be good if this is your first foray into VPNs. It works on lots of different devices, can be set up to auto-connect and you can have up to 5 connections simultaneously. I don't notice a huge difference in network speed when using it, but I have pretty fast internet where even cutting it in half wouldn't impact most streaming. The main thing you have to get used to is that certain activities won't work, like casting content.
Overall, this is a decent VPN for up to 5 simultaneous connections (not limited to 5 devices mind you), with simple controls. While the logging policy isn't ironclad for ultimate protection, it does at least cover enough bases that it made me comfortable using it, especially for this price.
