NOT Waterproof, even a little.

I bought this bag because, like most dad's I know, my family packs 94% of the clothing and shoes they own for a weeklong vacation. Whereas I can pack for 3 months and have it fit in your standard drawstring bag, my two teenage daughters' suitcases weighed approximately 785 pounds, (each). Our vehicle was so heavy I had to check the weight limit of bridges before we crossed. What makes this more aggravating is that this was mostly a beach vacation and the clothing-packed to skin-shown ratio was about 38-1, compounding my frustration.
Despite having the 'packing gene' that allows me to maximize space using the Tetris method of packing, I just knew I would appreciate having extra space that a luggage rack bag provides, lest I (again) fight the laws of physics by packing 85 sq. ft. of luggage into 62 sq. ft. of space. But I digress...
I bought this specifically because it said 'waterproof' and when I first opened it, it looked like the liner inside would indeed keep stuff dry. The problem was once I had loaded it up and tightened the straps, the liner apparently pelletized, leaving little black pieces of the liner over all of our luggage. So after driving to Florida with what amounted to a mesh-like bag, 3 out of 5 of us spent two days walking around Universal Studios with damp clothes, leaving me both literally and figuratively chafed.
The moral of the story is, don't go on vacation with your family. But if you do, only pack what can fit in your vehicle. And if you can't do that, get a hard plastic luggage box.
I am going to be seeking a full refund.

A MUST FOR COLLEGE BOUND KIDS!!

LOVE IT. Instruction challenged middle aged mom here. I bought this cargo bag knowing my college son was returning home last weekend with more crap than he hauled to college back in September. First of all the size of this bag is deceiving. It looks big but it's ginormous. We chose to put all his clothes, shoes, notebooks, bedding and lighter items in this bag and use interior car space for his PC and more damage prone items. Of course we did not read the directions but it would have made more sense to install the bag (super easy, you cannot install it improperly although having read the directions after our journey home, we realize we could have secured the bag better to the roof of the SUV) PRIOR to loading it. No matter, like I mentioned we only stuffed it with lighter things and flung it onto the rooftop (took 2 people to do it but now we know better). It rained all day and evening and while the bag got a little damp, the inside was dry as were all the items. No tearing, no seam stress despite the long highway drive and makeshift installation. Its an amazing bag that can double as a household storage bag.
Made It From CA To VT No Problem!!!

Bought this bag to put on top of my 2015 Rav4 for a move across the country. It was a perfect fit between the factory rails that came with the Rav. It made it through a 6 day, 3,000 mile, 45 hour journey without any problems at all. It never moved an inch even in high winds and 8+ hour days on the interstate at 70+ mph. Aside from some bug splatter, it looked the same when we arrived in Vermont as it did when we left California. VERY high quality construction and beefy zippers. We didn't get any really heavy rain, but did get some steady rain for a few hours and everything stayed bone dry. We loaded 2 suitcases, 5 extra large vacuum packed bags of clothes, a hand bag, and a bunch of jackets, dress clothes, etc that we didn't want to shrink down. It definitely had some room left in it if we wanted to add a few more things. I admit we were skeptical because of the low price, but I was made a believer! Just get one already!!!
I would recommend this to everyone and they should understand that it ...

I read previous reviews and knew it could leak. I had it on my car for almost 4 weeks. During that time there were a few light rain days and some snow but one day we had a huge, day long thunderstorm! the rain poured down and caused flooding all over the place. The rivers were raising and blocking roads. Because I knew about the possibly of it leaking I only vacuum sealed storage bags of clothes in there. When I finally found a place to live and went to finally remove the "turtle" on my roof about 2 gallons of water ran out! BUT all the clothes were still dry. I would recommend this to everyone and they should understand that it could and probably will leak especially if there is a pouring down rain.
I purchased it because I was moving from Seattle area to Dayton, Ohio and this product was very affordable.

works, but LOUD

Ok this thing does what it says it will do which is keep your stuff secure and dry (didn't drive in the rain so I can't be sure, but it feels very water-resistant). That said, I secured it without a roof rack but it was completely full and I followed directions and secured the straps as tight as possible and what they don't mention is that this is LOUD. I drove with this for 12 1/2 hours from Minneapolis to Denver and during the first 4 hour leg where I drove straight south, the crosswind makes the straps vibrate and HOWL. Like I had to turn up the volume on the stereo to deafeningly loud just so that I could understand the podcasts I was listening to. I would've lost my mind if it had been that loud the whole time; it was better once we went west but still definitely audible. I drive cross-country frequently and originally I had planned to use this for my stuff every time so I could free up the back of the car and have more room for my dog, but I won't be using this in the future unless it's a short drive or my car is completely full.
