• •WET BLOCKING: used for natural fibers (wool, cotton, linen, silk, hemp, alpaca, etc.). This method consists of using moisture to block. Usually, the fabric is immersed by soaking the object for 10-15 mins in tepid water. After excess moisture is removed (usually by pressing the knitted item between layers of clean, light colored towels), the object is laid out flat (and possibly stretched and/or pinned into the correct size and shape) and allowed to air dry.
• •STEAM BLOCKING: used for acrylic and other synthetics. Acrylic yarn is essentially bound plastic fibers, so wet blocking does not affect it. For acrylic to be blocked effectively, it is necessary to use heat, usually delivered via steam. This heat, delivered carefully and sparingly, softens and slightly melts the acrylic fibers, which then cool into their new, blocked shape. Note that steam blocking of acrylic is permanent.
