After having watched multiple seasons of The Curse of Oak Island, I felt my recently retired adventure-loving dad should take up the art of metal detecting. After much research, the Garrett Ace 250 seemed to be voted best for novice yet determined treasure sportsmen and price was inline with competition. My vision of father/daughter competitive prospecting was short lived - couldn't count on his commitment to Gary Drayton stardom. I however did venture out with the machine and masterfully detected 3 can tabs, a metal bracket, and presumably vintage 1980's Budweiser can.

Coil went bad after only a few uses. The thing pings metal all over the place (including the air). Reset it twice, but nope it's a bad coil. Checked forums about this and it seems like I'm not the only one who has had this problem.

I bought this product mainly (ok really only) to find my IP road pins on a large tract of land I own. I have many tracts and lots of pins and only knew the "general area" that they were. Bamm!!! This thing helped me immensely and saved me a "resurvey and spot" fee to find the road. So, for me it paid for itself immediately and then some. I will use it for other uses and see how that works out.

This is my first detector so I cannot speak comparatively so nor do I claim to have much authority on the subject, but I will say with the research I've done prior to buying it and my couple years of using this that it would be a great first buy for someone looking to take on the hobby. There is no perfect all around detector(from what I understand) but this is a very good middle of the road one in which you will get a very nice detector without totally breaking the bank. It's very user friendly and gets the job done
