The pilot light heats up the thermocouple, as the thermocouple heats up it produces millivolts (1 - 1,000 of a volt). Once the thermocouple is hot enough, causing it to produce the correct amount of millivolts, it sends the signal to open the gas to the outdoor fire pit, fire feature or indoor gas fireplace
