Delicious Caramel Tasting Dates
michelle✓ Verified PurchaseMay 12, 2018
I am a medjoul date addict. When searching for dates, i thought id give these a go since they had such Great reviews. They are in face delicious. Don't just them by how dry the look on the outside until you bite into the chewy sweetness inside. They are much smaller than i was expecting. I really enjoy them though. They are a little expensive for me, so I do not know how often i will but them, because i go through them like crazy. But, i am glad that i tried them and will probably splurge every now and then. 😊
Don't taste the same as before

I had ordered these over and over, loved them. Then I bought a large tin at Costco and didn't care for them but ate them. Then in April I went back to the date lady, ordered 3 bags, I am on my second bag and I keep thinking I ordered the wrong thing. These dates are smaller, tough, and dry. What happened? They always tasted like caramel dates before and I love them. I don't want to give up on the Date Lady but these 3 bags are not good at all.
A Mixed Bag...

Love the packaging. I really like medjool dates so I thought I'd give these a try. I bought two bags because it was the better deal price-wise. Unfortunately, the one bag I've opened has been disappointing. Not quite half have been soft and delicious (creamy and mildly sweet). The other part of the bag has been unpleasantly chewy/tough.
THE best dates I have ever had, and I have had a ton, folks. Recipe suggestions!

UPDATE 5/16/18
With recent batches being more chewy than previous batches, I reached out to the Date Lady and she did explain that when growing fruit organically in an unpredictable climate, sometimes the harvests yield different results. I had just received 2 bags and found them to be very different from all of my prior orders from her. But I was determined to find a way to enjoy them and wanted to share 2 ways to enjoy your dates, even when they initially seem too firm.

First, I put a handful into a cup of spring water and allow them to soak overnight. In the morning, I put the soak water into a blender, pit the dates, blend on high and add sea salt to taste and what you end up with tastes EXACTLY like the best caramel sauce on the planet! Fantastic for dipping fruit, drizzling onto oatmeal or yogurt, or anything else fun you'd do with caramel ("nice cream" sundae??)

Second, as a natural and refreshing recovery drink, I blend about 10 dates with a couple of cups of spring water and either wild blueberries or organic strawberries (frozen). You can add some lemon or lime and a pinch of sea salt and it's fabulous. I sip this on hot summer days to keep from losing too many electrolytes when I'm sweating a lot and that's also part of what makes this a terrific recovery drink. With the lemon or lime added it almost resembles a strawberry daiquiri.

You can also make gorgeous raw pie crusts by pulsing pitted dates with nuts like cashews or walnuts, pressing into pie tins and filling with whatever you love. Sliced apples with cinnamon and some of the date caramel blend above makes a gorgeous filling for a summertime raw apple pie but the possibilities are limitless.

And of course, you can blend your morning smoothie or java with dates (soaked if they're too firm) as a natural sweetener that will add nutritional value as well.

Dates are actually recommended now for diabetics, so they're not something to avoid or worry about if you are watching sugar or have diabetes. You can hit the interwebs for more on that, there are plenty of reputable articles out there about this.

But I trust that the dates will return to gooey, decadent form with the next harvest and in the meanwhile, these are just a couple of fun ways to make great use of these organic babies. Trust me, both of those "recipes" above are to LIVE for.

I have ordered 5 pound bags of dates on amazon from various sellers for years...I haven't managed to receive a bag of moist, fresh dates in almost 2 years but I would soak them and make the best of it. I came across this brand and decided to try the small bag and I am astounded at the quality here. They are so moist it's like caramel in a thin, sugary casing. Even the best batches I have had, on amazon or bought fresh at the market, have not come close to this. The flavor is remarkable, the texture is gooey and perfect, I am in heaven. Date Lady, you just converted me. I am ordering more right now and will be checking out the other products. This is literally like sticky toffee pudding without cooking, I love it!
Interesting Date Variety

These bahri dates are of the soft variety whereas the common medjool is semi soft and deglet noor is semi dry. They are smaller than both the common varieties. Flavor-wise, the bahri are very sweet and taste similar to caramel. They are excellent snacking dates. The texture is extremely gooey and the outer skin is soft and easily damaged. These attributes make them nigh impossible to pit without utterly squashing them. Therefore, their use for culinary applications is limited. Both the medjools and deglet noors are easier to handle and are superior for baking use.

Personally, I enjoy the bahri's flavor but not the size or texture. I like the dry date varieties as they have a bit of toothiness to them even when cooked and do not leave your fingers sticky when handled. The date sugar offered by this company, which I believe is made from dried bahri dates, is by far the best date sugar I've sampled. These whole bahri dates are worth buying just to try, however.
