Anti-Cat Plant Cage!
Zenmatica✓ Verified PurchaseSeptember 9, 2023
I made a giant cage for my houseplants to keep my cats out of them. I made a basic sqaure and left a 4x1 section of panels for a "door". Others have warned that the shelves were not very sturdy. Since I wasn't making shelves I used three sections internally at the top as "flying buttresses" to further support the ceiling of the cage. I used mini steel carabiner clips to both hinge and secure the door on the corners. I used a single zip tie where any two or more edges of the panels met. I laid two of those three light LED units on the roof (with the bases detached) set on timers. And yes, the door works for watering the plants.

PROS (there are very few):
*completely configurable - if you are not making the standard configuration, plan it out on paper first to make sure you are getting enough panels.

CONS (there are so so many):
* I did not receive enough connectors to make even the standard configuration - Amazon has many options to order additional connectors (they all appear to be the same), many with next day delivery.
* Quality control on the mesh panels is abysmal - many panels were bowed, a couple were not quite the same size as the rest (but close) and others had the smaller internal wires loose (watch out for those!)
* I was sent about 100 of these little tiny "double c" clips - in white not black! - no information was provided in the instructions as to what these were for
* The little plastic hammer they provide is useless and laughable - pitched that and used my hands to double check that each panel was fully secured into the connector(s). If your hands/fingers get tired you can use a pair of pliars to make sure each panel is fully secured.
* I purchased 200 4 inch zip ties. You can use shorter ones, but they are not as sturdy. I used about 150 of the 200 for this project. Check and check again to make sure you have all panels zip tied and then trim all the ends. I used a wire snip....it will take forever.
* If you want to make "hinges" make sure you get carabiner clips that have a large enough clip opening to clear the wire (some of the ones I got were poor quality and would not work).
* Before you load your unit up with things, make sure you haven't missed any connections by grabbing the unit and giving it a couple of vigorous shakes and then checking for any disconnects. You will be happy you did that before it falls apart after you put things on the unit!

If you want to make this Anti-Cat Plant Cage-
Sides:
3 panels across by 6 panels high - make 3 of these

For the side with a door:
2 panels across by 6 panels high PLUS 2 panels only at the top of what would be the 3rd vertical row.

Door:
4 panels in a vertical strip

Ceiling/Roof (Optional but highly recommended for sturdiness):
3 x 3 panels (3 x 3 square)

Buttresses (Optional but also highly recommended, especially if a cat might try to walk across the top):
Place a panel at the top of one side pointing towards the center of the cage so that it fits into three connectors with the fourth corner just kind of hanging out by itself (i.e. "flying"). Do this in 3-4 different locations around the upper interior of the cage. (If you put four up at the top you should exactly use up all of the panels.)

10-20 small-medium double sided carabiner clips (for hinge and to securely close the door)
Approx. 150 black 4 inch zip ties
YOU WILL NEED TO ORDER AT LEAST 25 ADDITIONAL CONNECTORS!

Tools:
Pliers (optional)
wire snips (not optional)

Assemble three of the main walls, install the ceiling/roof, then install the wall with the door last. Check connections. Zip tie. Install door. Voila! Yes, it will take several hours, and it is a pain, but now I can have my plants and cats without having chicken wire around the plants. And the roof is plenty strong enough for LED plant lights. :-)
Buy cable ties, too
C. Henderson✓ Verified PurchaseSeptember 6, 2023
I am convinced that about four factories make all the wire sections, and another four factories make the hookemers (technical term!), and the managers of all the factories hate each other and refuse to share actual measurements. Some wires are thicker, some thinner, some hookemers are shallower, some deeper. None of them hold strongly enough to move the unit from where you assembled it, to where you will use it. Thus, the cable ties. Join a layer, attach each shelf and side piece to the others with cable ties. Do the next layer, and cable tie. Once you are done, a unit of sixteen cubes (4 x 4), can be picked by one weakling (me) and moved all over the place without sections coming loose.
Works great, easy to put together

I received this promptly, and the instructions were clear. It was easy to put together, I did it myself, no help from the hubby. It looks nice and is sturdy. It's in a big walk in closet storage room and everything is nicely organized. I did order extra round connectors and I used zip ties to make it more secure. You really have to push to get it snapped together. I had zip ties, so didn't order those, but you will want them. Just use same color and put them in inconspicuous places, it doesn't hurt the look.
clever design but the metalwork is shoddy
Kindle Customer✓ Verified PurchaseJuly 12, 2023
I like the design concept a lot. The plastic parts are clever and sturdy, and when the wire is in correctly they make a nice click. The wire panels are not good - not square, not flat, and the wire welds pop off. If I could find a higher quality replacement for them, even if they cost more, I would. Because the panels are so poorly made, the overall stability is not good, so I'm attaching the built units to studs with pipe clamps, using zip ties to support the joints, and hoping for the best.
FAST AND CHEAP!

The 14x14 cube size is PERFECT for notebook storage and I own 50 notebooks which I needed to store.
In order to be sure this unit would hold together, I purchased black zip ties. I also attached it to the wall by using special hardware. It did get the job done, but if I had been able to find the same dimensions in a wooden unit, I would gladly have purchased it. I worry that eventually the notebooks may cause the cube floors to sag. I may have to make special wooden "floors" to add to it.
