A no-fuss way to cover my gray 🩶
Falé Family✓ Verified Purchase•December 28, 2023
I've been using various colors of this brand for many years now. I've had grey hair since I was a kid and I got tired of dying it over and over again. If you leave any of these colors on dry, clean hair for a few hours, it absolutely will cover the grey! I've had so much fun playing with any color I could imagine. I don't need bleach, I just dye my naturally grey bits and it looks great!
I've tried purple, pink, green and blue and this last time I decided to give brown a try for once. The natural color worked just as well as the fun ones!
As others suggested, don't use it as a shampoo. Leave it on dry clean hair for as long as you can. I usually pick 1 day a month to slap it on the grey parts and let it sit for 5 or so hours. It's so much easier than permanent dye. No smell, no regrets since it washes out eventually; and no damage! Plus, one bottle goes a loooong way.

You actually don’t need a YouTube tutorial to get a decent result!

I'm not one to dye my hair. But it's like Coronavirus Color Challenge since I can't go to the salon.
My hair comes in a mousey-blonde naturally, then lightens to almost platinum on its own in the sun. So I usually just get highlights to deal with the darker blonde color at my roots.
...It's been months. I was like whatever, I'll try something new - it's not like anyone will see it. I've always liked Kelly Osbourne's hair. I didn't know how to do it without making my hair fall out...so I started with a box dye, One you'd get from CVS and did a whole head color of light/ash blonde. I didn't bleach it...too scared. The box dye lightened me up a bit, but the roots looked orange-brassy.
Still feeling a mess...I decided to go for the pink look. I saw the reviews and pics for this product and was like "meh, this will washout." Why not!?
I DID put it everywhere the first time, following the instructions to apply it to wet hair. It was easy to apply, it's just like a conditioning mask texture. Doesn't drip. Kinda' idiot proof that way. Anyhow, it produced a nice light color - not quite as bold as I thought - but I enjoyed it and my hair was soft and various colors of pink. I did it! Gold star!
Then I got greedy for more cowbell! ...I mean pink. So I took everyone's advice and ran through that process again - wet hair, rinse, and blow dry. Not bad! It looked a TAD darker and I was pleased.
Honestly, I don't have thick hair or much of it but I suck at getting ALL my hair covered with the conditioner and I had blotches. I could use a friend to get that stuff everywhere. I did use a comb throughout application. I'm not patient enough to apply it differently in certain areas and blah blah blah So...yeah that's why it's blotchy. My fault. But it does comb through nicely without tangling - if your worried about your hair being a tumbleweed, that's not gonna' happen.
Ok Ok ...Scrooge McDucked it the next morning because when I woke up the next day, I put a room full of coins you can dive in amount of it on my DRY hair. I let it sit for probably an hour. Mind you, despite having naturally blonde/light hair (and since I didn't bleach it) nothing really tends to "sticks" to my hair very well. Even permanent dye from the salon washes out of my hair in a few days!
Anyway! These pics are from the rinse off after the DRY application. By the way, the bottle is huge-or a little goes a long way. I think doing this 3 times on my full head of hair I probably still have 75% of the bottle left.
Also, It doesn't smell heinous. Actually, it's got an enjoyable maybe sweet-floral sent. HOWEVER, You WILL get a little "burn" if you let it touch your face/forehead for a tad too long. Oops! It goes away quickly.
And yes, will also get pink hands if you're like me and take like an hour to get the stuff in your hair. I just used a magic eraser and some alcohol/nail polish and warm soap and water and it came right off.
Again, My hair is still very soft. In fact, I would say since using this, my fine hair has had fewer and fewer little rats-nest tangles in it from just daily wear (wind, chores, lipstick getting in it - cement last week - look, I said I'm a mess).
I've gotten a lot of compliments on my hair with this, since I sent pics of it to my pals who actually wouldn't have seen it if it sucked because Coronavirus! Yay!
It seems like it will rinse out within a month - for me - probably much sooner. But as it rinses out, it also seems like it will look decent - maybe NOT a mess. If it's kinda' meh, I was thinking of trying a peachy color.
Final note: even if you're not one of those people that are good with hair and makeup and girl-stuff, you CAN manage this. It's just like a regular conditioner you'd have in your shower - except it dyes your hair. Also, I didn't find it stained my sink or shower. I don't even think it stained the little "hair towel turban" I used to flip it up when I let it sit. Maybe slightly pink? No more than if a brush full of makeup fell on it. (Yes FULL of makeup - I usually look like Harley Quinn when I "try" makeup so...yeh, a brush full). It'll prolly wash out, though!
So, yeah. Don't be a mess. Even if you are a mess...you should try this. You won't MAKE a mess; you'll look cool? I don't know...can you pull off pink when you're almost 40? Whatever - you might have a moment of clarity about covid-coloring your hair and your coolness or lack thereof as correlated to age ...maybe profession. Prolly shouldn't have done this before a job interview...meh, color cabin fever, what can you do?
I'm glad I took a chance and put the effort in! Do it up, it's fun! ^_^

Use it mixed with silver blue to tone grey hair
Amazon Buyer✓ Verified Purchase•December 21, 2023
I realize everyone is different, but here is my story. At 59 years old I decided (during the pandemic) to quit coloring my hair. I shaved my head (seriously). The grey was a shock but not as shocking as the white. I really hated it but didn't want to go back to dying it. Enter this onyx toner which I mix with the silver grey. I put it on my shoulder length hair in the shower, then rinse off about ten minutes later. It leaves a beautiful salt and pepper look to my hair. I'll never be without it. I only do this weekly so the bottles last a long time. I tried the silver but like the onyx and silver blue mixture better. It's been nothing but positive for me for the past 3+ years. No ugly white or yellow toned hair for me. I Love this stuff!
Amazing results… once I ignored the directions
Feathers✓ Verified Purchase•December 2, 2023
I wasn't impressed with this stuff at first. Granted, I'm using it on either pre-dyed (but not bleached) or virgin hair, so result's are always going to be iffy with this type of dye, and that's just the nature of the beast. It does nothing if I start with wet hair, and it adds barely a tint on dry hair if I rinse it after the recommended 20 minutes. However, I noticed that this tint stayed on my hair for months, which is extremely rare in a red dye.
Recently I tried an experiment (or rather, got angry enough at my 3" roots) - I applied to dry, unwashed hair, then put a plastic dye cap on and left it there for 8 hours. When I washed it out, my hair was actually burgundy! And much like I saw with the lighter application, it did not bleed onto fabrics or fade. Even after a month it only faded a little bit, and I even washed my hair with head-and-shoulders a couple times!
Obviously if you're going to try leaving it on for such a long time, do a patch test to make sure your skin won't react badly.

Natural Redhead with Virgin Hair Here....
Bailey✓ Verified Purchase•November 25, 2023
TL;DR
Easy to use. Didn't turn my virgin hair orange. Applied on wet natural red virgin hair for 8 minutes. Smell isn't bad. Hair left soft and conditioned. Achieved desired results. Highly recommend!
I'm 43 years old and my hair is starting to darken out to an auburn I don't really care much for. People are starting to call my red hair brunette. Makes me sad I'm losing the vibrancy of my red!!
After reading the reviews I was scared to try this. Many were way more orange than I wanted. Most are on already bleached/color treated hair. The application times and methods were all over the place. I wanted only subtle change and nothing drastic. I wanted to keep my red hair natural looking, but make the color pop again. I read through SO MANY of these reviews trying to decide if I should and how to execute this flawlessly. Lol
APPLICATION METHOD I USED:
I decided to stay on the safe side and apply it in the shower on wet hair for 8 minutes. If it wasn't enough I would up the time. I know it washes out but I didn't want to have to take 3 showers to tone it down and waste unnecessary product. I washed my hair with shampoo first to make sure my scalp and roots were clean and free of oils. Then used approximately 6 pumps total and worked it into my hair (like shampoo) again. Then ran a comb through it all from root to ends to ensure even distribution. After my 8 minute timer went off, I Rinsed with cool water and got out. I used a hair dryer to dry my hair. Curled it all then took the photo.
ROOTS:
I noticed many mentioned their roots not being touched and I'm not sure on those if they were all on people with color treated hair. I felt like I read one natural that felt the roots got neglected. There was no issues with my roots
STAINING:
I had no issues with staining. Applying in the shower I just worked it into my hair and didn't get it everywhere. Rinsed my hands immediately once I got it in there.
SMELL
I personally liked the smell. It's not very strong. I'm honestly surprised it even has been mentioned.
CONDITIONING
It left my hair feeling soft. It was nearly slipping out of my curling iron afterwards.
COLOR
I am happy with the color it has added. Very subtle, but I can tell. It did not completely cover my greys but I do think one wash with it toned them down. Is exactly what I was looking for. I might wait a couple washes and then leave it on wet hair for 10 minutes. Then update with a photo.
REMOVE COLOR:
I accidentally discovered that Apple Cider Vinegar shampoo will take most all of the color out in one wash! I wanted to add this for anybody that would like to reverse the process after undesired results.
I LOVE that this has and will revived my natural red hair!! Highly recommend to my fellow natural redhead sistas!!
