I loved that this unit was equipped with police/fire/aviation bands right out of the box. I had it up and running in a moment and easily programmed my wife's FD dispatcher frequency in. One sits upstairs in the office, the other, in our kitchen. I had received a portable Bearcat handheld programmable as a gift and found its strengths to be its weakness. So many buttons to program in so many different ways, we never really figured out how to program it correctly and were disappointed it couldn't stay on while being charged. With the Whistler Desktop, its simplicity was a great contrast. We punched our frequency in and hit set. That was that. Sometimes we like to listen to police band in our area and simply hit the police band button and watch it scan away. If you're looking for a basic scanner that's easy to use right out of the box and has great volume, this will not disappoint.
