The magnets are probably not the neodymium type (super-strong), but this device worked like it was supposed to. I used 3 different brands of regular magnetic polish (not U.V.), held the magnet close but not touching, and kept it close to the polish for about 10 seconds. The design held until dry, but it is more apparent when the sample is viewed in person than in the included photo. Also, the polish has other inclusions which may obscure the magnetic particle pattern somewhat.
