The New Queen of Indie Pop

Maggie Rogers' career has been a long-time coming. Since her viral encounter with Pharrell Williams and the explosion of "Alaska," it's seemed all but certain that she would be the next big thing. Her ascent since then--from overnight YouTube star to festival headliner--is well deserved, and her first full-length record is proof positive.

Heard It In A Past Life is personal and evocative--a vehicle for Rogers to explore everything from relationships to unexpected fame. It has undeniable pop appeal, whether she is crooning in a bluesy ballad, rocking to a smooth R&B track, or bopping to the infectious clicks and thumps of lush, layered drum machine. Her pause-givingly good gospel-infused vocals are undoubtedly what makes her act show-stopping as she soars for notes that will raise the hair on your neck and delivers hypnotizing verses in a husky alto. But Rogers is much more than an excellent voice. She has an uncanny knack for crafting irresistible hooks and penning lyrics that are equal parts thought-provoking poetic ruminations and universal truths. She shows so much of herself on this record that you will undoubtedly see yourself somewhere in her stories and confessions.

In case it wasn't clear, it has to be said: Maggie Rogers has far, far more to offer to the world than the already exquisite "Alaska." The years since her explosion have clearly helped her refine her craft. "The Knife" swirls with disco attitude. "Light On" is anthemic and exultant. And "Fallingwater" might even surpass "Alaska" in its beauty; it's a truly breathtaking song. It's hard to imagine anyone not falling in love on some level with this album. It's something special, and we're lucky to start the year off so strong.
Sooo Good

I stumbled across this album as a new release on Amazon Music, and now I listen to it on repeat. It is sooo good.

She has a lovely voice yes, but the lyrics are deep and resonate with you. If not on one song then on the next; just keep listening. As an artist she shows that rare gift of being able to assemble the music and her vocal patterns when many artist just match the melody.

If you are a fan of singer song writers then listen, if you are a fan if intelligent art then listen, if you are a fan integral music then listen to Maggie Rogers. There is something here for everyone.
Unbelievable Talent...

After seeing the video of Pharrell "critiquing" Maggie Rogers during her masterclass (If you haven't seen it, I strongly urge you to go watch it right now), I couldn't wait to get my hands on this CD. And it does not disappoint. It's a rare & beautiful thing when someone has been blessed with so much talent. Every song reinforces the feeling that Maggie Rogers is an old soul with the wisdom of someone who's lived several lifetimes...
Bought This for Grandma - She LOVES the song 'Light On' from "Tall Girl" movie

Workin-Grandma is in retirement mode, and after I found the movie "Tall Girl" she watches it every time she needs a "Feel Good" treatment to get away from the constant politics and Covid downers on TV. The good thing is I like the song, the bad thing is It's become my most persistent "Ear Worm" (The song that gets in your head and won't go away).

The other songs are good, and W-G's become a fan of the artist. So a real bargin, I bought it for one song on a CD (W-G doesn't do playlists etc) and we got a whole collection to listen to.
Don't trust the Pitchfork review

This album is fantastic. The more I listen to it, the better it gets. Maggie has a fantastic voice, the music is fresh with interesting electronic elements, and she gets credit for writing her own songs (not buying hits like so many other female singers). My only complaint is that the label on one side of the vinyl is not properly affixed (it's all puffy where it should be flush to the record).
