Elegoo's 2-wheeled self-blancing robot. A winner.

Elegoo makes several robot/car/tank-like kits,
and Amazon seems to lump all the reviews together, so:
This review is about the:
"Elegoo Tumbler Self-Balancing Robot Car Kit"
which is their only 2-wheeled self-balancing kit.
I received V1.1, current as of this date.

This kit is beginner-friendly, and only involves mechanical assembly.
It even includes the single small Philips screwdriver needed.
No soldering. Just connect three connector cables once built.

Mine worked perfectly first time.
Found one small inconsequential typo in the online assembly manual,
but corrected in the included printed manual.
Took about an hour to build.

Not strictly necessary, but you'll want to download the
accompanying phone app (Android or IOS) which works fine
as a remote control over Bluetooth.

If, however, you want to go further
(much, much further) than just having a
cool toy...:

One very nice thing is that the entire product is effectively
open-sourced.
You'll want to download the .zip from Elegoo's download site
which contains *everything* you'd ever want,
including the source Sketch to the operating
Arduino Nano's firmware which compiled perfectly,
(although it comes pre-loaded on the Nano
so a PC or Mac is not necessary to simply play with it.)

Also in the .zip are pretty comprehensive design files,
including tutorials on how each sensor works and
the overall theory of operation.
There's also sample code for operating each section
(ie. Motors, ultrasonic, LEDs, etc, etc)
complete with code walkthroughs.
Lesson 2 (of 7) ("Balance Control") goes into
very very deep detail on the PID algorithms,
which here are used to effectuate self-balancing"¦

There's even a section on how to configure
Visual Studio Code for use in the Arduino context
simply because that's what their engineers prefer to use
over the Arduino IDE. Geek heaven.

Obviously a lot of engineering went into this product,
included for all to see.

Overall, a great product and
eminently hackable, if that's your thing.

Wanted to get into learning to build servo robots from parts but needed a starting point. This tank kit seemed perfect. The kit comes well packaged and very well organized. All of the parts are labeled and photo instructions fairly easy to follow. The frame is very sturdy, which is great, but that also causes an issue with connectivity. The primary control feature is IR (infra-red, like the TV remote). Unfortunately, the straight-line connection is blocked by the metal frame except from directly behind and low as the frame is not enclosed at the back. That means if you are standing directly above it or turn it 90º or more you lose control until you change where you are standing. The IR sensor is soldered in, so it cannot be moved on top of the tank unless you use the alternate assembly instructions which places the entire computer board on top of the frame--which is ugly and clunky looking.

The secondary form of remote control is supposed to be via wi-fi using the Elegoo app; however, I have not been able to get most of the features to work properly. The app shows it is connected and I am able to see the camera feed; however, the controls to move the direction of the camera are not working. Even more importantly, the tank does not respond to any of the app controls or settings via wi-fi either.

The troubleshooting part of the Elegoo site didn't really offer much help apart from a YouTube tutorial video. It drives a little crooked out of the box. The tutorial only recommends making sure it is flat so the sensor can calibrate when you turn it on. That unfortunately didn't help.

Overall, I think this is a really cool kit with lots of features. I had hoped they would work perfectly straight out of the box. Instead, it looks like I will need to spend some extra time making minor adjustments. Still a pretty good kit to start with.

Assembly tutorial is detailed and perfect. It contains all necessary steps to assemble a robot car. It was fun assembling it. It took me around 2h to assemble everything. And in the end it was really cool when robot started moving :)

Instructions how to remotely control a robot either by provided remote control or by Android phone are detailed and it was pretty easy to learn to control/move robot.

Also it is easy to program basic programs in Scratch for moving robot around and to detect obstacles.

I would recommend this product both as a gift and as a cool toy to play and implement some basic autonomous driving.
