No assembly required. Just get it out of the box and plug in. The brick exterior appears to be real and this makes it a bit heavy. However, it looks good as a piece of furniture and is quite slim. I am using it as a small console table at my entrance hallway where there was previously inadequate heating. It puts out quite a bit of heat. The remote is fully functional unlike some electric fireplaces with limited functionality remotes. I am very happy with the purchase.
