Getting used to the heat it produces

I've grilled on this 4 times so far. I'm getting used to the heat it produces; it gets hot so I added a thermometer to the top. When cooking steaks the fat that drips will catch fire quickly on the cover over the burner and still be burning when it hits the bottom of the grill. I think it would be better with a more solid grate to cook on rather than the open one it has. Still very handy.
