Several reviews criticized how long it takes for the results to come back. I'm curious: how long to people assume DNA sequencing and analysis should take? It can take years for human DNA sequencing to be completed, depending on how busy the lab is and how good the sample provided is. It took seven weeks for me to receive the results, which is more than reasonable.
The swab itself is incredibly easy to use - simply stick it in your cat's mouth, move around a bit, put it in the provided tube, shake around, and ship it off in the box provided. The company was very good at keeping me up to date. They let me know when they received the sample, when it arrived at their labs, when it was finished sequencing, and when analysis was completed.
In terms of accuracy: you people need to understand that DNA sequencing is not cut-and-dry. A real person analyzes DNA samples, be it for a cat or for a human, so some of it is subjective (for both cat and human). The larger the DNA pool is, the more accurate the results will be. I had suspicions in terms of what breed/s my cat was, and this confirmed it. I mostly got it for the health markers, which were extensive and very detailed. Overall, if you're curious about your cat's breed and health, this DNA kit is as good as it gets.

Well, I love genetics so as soon as I found out about Basepaws cat DNA tests I immediately wanted to have my 2 cats tested. I'm quite satisfied with the results. Basepaws compares your cat's DNA to the DNA in their database and then tells you which breed groups your cat has the most similar DNA to. And they rank the breeds in that group by how similar the DNA of your cat is to that breed. It's not like the dog DNA breed tests which are much more black & white because DNA breed testing for cats hasn't been around as long and cat's did not go through the same process of domestication that dogs did. Basepaws also tests for a number of diseases which can be very useful. Both my cats came back as carriers for a gene mutation that causes a hemophilia-like bleeding disorder, but they only have one copy of the gene so they don't have the disease, so that was a relief.
Basepaws was really good about keeping you up to date on the progress of the DNA sample. I got numerous emails letting me know when the samples were being processed and analyzed. I does take a while after mailing in the samples for the results to be reported so it was nice to get the updates.
All in all, this DNA test is definitely worth it. It seems pretty accurate and with more time and more DNA samples I expect Basepaws will continuously update their algorithms and send clients their updated DNA results.
For now my cats came back as...Hazel is the torbie and she came back as a polycat (mixed breed) and Norwegian Forest Cat mix, and Ruby the orange tabby came back as a Ragdoll, polycat mix with a little Persian. Both had a small amount of Bengal. (I was told that Ruby is Hazel's mother, but not 100% sure.) I was expecting them to be Maine Coon mixes and I suspected Ruby had a tiny bit of Persian because she has such a pretty profile, so I was right about the Persian, but surprised to see the Ragdoll and NFC instead, but I can see it now that I know what to look for. NFC is so close to Maine Coon, anyway. The tests results have simply fascinated me. I recommend getting your cat tested through Basepaws. It's not just fun, it can be very helpful as far as health issues, too. And the more samples they get, the more their database will increase, thus making the tests more accurate and informative. We will actually all help each other to help our cats the more we get them tested. It's a snowball effect type thing.

I used Basepaws testing on all 4 of my stray cats. It was cool to know what lineage of breed they most identify with. I also like the wildcat feature and genetic health screening.

On February 10 we had to let one of our cats peacefully move on due to a saddle thrombus. She had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which apparently is almost impossible to detect until the saddle thrombus forms. And once there's a saddle thrombus, there's almost no chance of survival. Hypertropic cardiomyopathy is caused by a genetic defect that Basepaws checks for. Completely broken hearted, my husband and I never wanted to go through the experience of losing a cat due to an undetected disease again.
This is where Basepaws comes in. We ordered 2 Basepaw kits and 2 Wisdom Panel kits. We have received the results of one of the Wisdom Panel kits (still waiting on the second), and we received the results of both Basepaw kits today. I am confident the results are reliable for a few reasons. The first is that the results of the Basepaws test was the same as the results from the one Wisdom Panel test we've received. The second reason why I think Basepaws is reliable is because my cats went to their regular vet for their annual exam and we discovered one of them really needs a teeth cleaning, and then other one has good teeth. Their Basepaws results reflected this as well.
I didn't care so much about the ancestry part. While both of my cats are siamese cats, the only indication of that was their results said their coat is likely a siamese pattern. The rest of the ancestry was very non-specific. I'm not sure this is the right product if you're looking to learn about your cat's breed.
I 100% recommend if you want to know if your kitty is at risk for health problems. I appreciate Basepaws for giving me some peace of mind.

This little kit is awesome! I am hoping we get the results back soon! I got him one and me one through Invate, i know different company, but, his did take two weeks to register from when i mailed it back. That is the only downside. That is the only reason i am giving it 4 stars.
