I have some similar, basic white/unfinished wood hand fans, but I also wanted some black ones. These didn't have a weird smell when they were first delivered and I haven't had any issues with opening or closing them. Not 100% sure why plain fans like these are more expensive than some brightly colored ones, but they're good and I hope they'll last for quite a while (especially since I have a second one for back-up).
