We purchased this fireplace and built a shiplap surround to hold this and our tv.
It was super easy to install. We just built a little frame and set it in it. The clearance required is minimal so our fireplace only sticks out 6" from the all. We were able to plug it into a regular outlet. No venting needing. The remote works great. If you don't want to use the remote there is also a switch to turn it on.
The heat is minimal. I'd say it's like a small space heater. However it does kick off heat you can feel. I live in Minnesota so I can see us putting the heater on frequently from November-February.
The rocks it comes with are a little cheesy so I'll likely order some fake logs to replace them with.
I can't speak to the durability as we have only had it installed a couple of months.
For the price, it's hard to imagine you can beat this. We looked at Menards and they don't have anything close to this size for the price we paid. This looks and works great.
I'd recommend this for anyone who wants to DIY a fireplace.

It was time for an update and this did the trick. We had an ugly corner wood burning fireplace that we used for years, but was getting tired of lugging wood in the house and all the dirt that came with it. We purchased this one based on the reviews. I couldn't tell you how easy or not the install was because my contractor did it, but what I can tell you is how beautiful this is! It has so many different colors as well as you can change the flame color the height and the speed. The heat works very well. I'm sure it's not going to really heat up the room a lot but I don't care because I have solar. I definitely recommend this fireplace.

I bought this for my chilly basement. Due to my situation I sadly had to send this back (and lost out on $22 for shipping). But it wasn't going to work without extensive rebuild where my old gas insert was. If I didn't have this problem I would have loved it! Fancy colorful flames and seemed like good heat. I would recommend. But make sure it's going to work with your home. Unless you plan on a new build surround. Or you lose out by returning it.

The instruction for installing and setup were perfect. This is such a great electric fireplace at such a good price. The heat it produces is minimal but that is not why we bought it. We chose the 60 inch size as we have a 75 inch TV. Hope this helps others.
