The stretching awl should have a opening on the large end so you can insert the plug as you are by placing the plug end into the awl opening and push the plug into hole while pushing awl through piercing. Also. the plugs should have notches to help secure the plug using the o-rings on both ends of plug, The o-rings pop off easily. I had to use the desired size jewelry which was difficult because no hole to accept jewelry threads.
