Great Upgrade for 2016 Toyota 4Runner Limited
Josh M.✓ Verified Purchase•July 18, 2023
Pros:
This is an awesome upgrade for my 2016 Toyota 4Runner Limited with OEM JBL Audio and Backup camera. Having Carplay is a must have and this supports both wired and wireless. All of my original functions including steering wheel controls, USB port, backup camera, microphone etc. still work.
Everything was included in the box for a full plug and play installation. You just need some basic tools to get this done.
The customer support was also very good. The company asked questions through Amazon about my specific vehicle year, make, model and trim as soon as I placed the order. They also provided a FW update and instructions for the head unit which fixed wireless Carplay issues I was having. All responses were within 12 hours.
Cons:
The instructions are not very good and the video link that Dasaita provides doesn't show all the steps. In my case, he was working on a different version of 4Runner. I had to watch multiple videos and look at several posts to get the connections right. See my pictures as this is what worked for my specific 4Runner. When all was said and done, there was only 1 connector from the main large wiring harness not used (see picture). In addition, I used the GPS cable, the WiFi antenna, the 4 Pin RCA harness with the brown connector for backup camera, the single USB harness with a pink connector that was mated with the single USB cable and then connected to the OEM connector coming out of the dash.
The brackets that are on the Dasaita head unit have screws that push the OEM brackets out. I removed the Dasaita brackets, attached the two brackets together, drilled out the screw hole for the Dasaita bracket and installed them as one piece. I have pictures of the steps and drill bit size I used.
I also don't show the transfer of the air vents, hazard lights, trim panel and clips from the OEM housing to the Dasaita housing but you can find videos on the internet.
Conclusion
Overall this is a very good unit and well worth the upgrade for the sadly outdated OEM head unit, even when it was new in 2016. Install took me about 4 hours but would have been much quicker had the instructions been clear.

Wish I had done this sooner

I had been debating between this HU and one on another website for a while. The latest version of the other HU was touchscreen only which I'm not a fan of (I like a volume knob for the passenger to allow the passenger to adjust the volume. This one looks a lot like the ones in the 2020+ 4Runner so I chose this one.
First some observations. The unit comes with a generic GPS antenna that seems to work OK just sitting on top of the unit, inside the dash. However, I wanted to use the 4Runner's GPS antenna so found an adapter online (not Amazon) that works great. The WiFi antenna broke (plastic "cover" came off) while putting the unit in the vehicle. The antenna worked fine but I was afraid something might short it out so I bought a replacement off of amazon which seems to be better built.
Cons:
1) The touch 'location' of the screen is a little off and I haven't found a way to calibrate it (I can on the Pioneer HU in my other vehicle).
2) Out of the box, it is very LOUD. Even volume 1 was louder. than I listen to music. I wound up going into the EQ and turning everything to it's lowest setting (-10). Now, 3 is quiet and 4 is comfortable. Still a little sensitive but works for me.
3) Takes a bit to boot up and connect to bluetooth and CarPlay. Not terrible but noticeable.
Pros:
1) Pretty much everything else! I had originally ordered one with Scout navigation thinking I could "get by" without CarPlay. However, using the phone as a hotspot, your favorite mapping app and your favorite entertainment app takes care of that and CarPlay works very well.
I just found the backup settings and enabled the unit's guidance. This will be a game changer! I love it.
Bottom line, this is a great addition to a pre-2020 4Runner and adds some (not all) of the features of the newer vehicles.

Glitchy CarPlay audio
S Bayha✓ Verified Purchase•June 21, 2023
Sometimes CarPlay plays fluidly without and pauses. Other times I get random pauses "¦. Almost like a buffer error. The connection seems to be over CarPlay via Wi-Fi not Bluetooth? Anyway this is definitely a great upgrade"¦ it just bugs me when the audio pauses and glitches and then the next drive it's fine. Updating firmware and software is weird because it's based on an android foundation. I wish it would just automatically update via my home Wi-Fi.
Edit:
I found lowering the audio quality smoothed out the audio. I was attempting lossless audio before and I think that made the wireless CarPlay choke.

Love but wish I could still have music on while in reverse
Mackenzie✓ Verified Purchase•May 30, 2023
After reading reviews about multiple head units for my 4runner this was the best option. I am so glad I got it!! I love this head unit so much and makes my sound quality 100x better. Been unsung it for months and honestly the only problem I've found is the music shuts off when I'm in revers which is really annoying but that's the only down side I have found. The CarPlay does take a min to kick on after starting up the car but well worth the short wait you have. Also when on the phone it can't seem to decide weather to connect to CarPlay or car stereo So the call cuts out multiple times before connecting completely. If you wait till your phone and radio are completely connected then you make the call there is no problem only when your already on the phone. All of those little things I can live with for the overall upgrade I got.
Easy replacement for the stock head unit

The install was fairly straight forward. Brackets need some adjusting to get them to sit proper and flush. It does clutter the back of the deck some with the extra modules and wires, but the unit is smaller so once you get them tucked you shouldnt have any issues.
Problems that I have had is now my bluetooth is intermittent and requires me to power off and on the deck to reinitialize the bluetooth. I have reached out to Dasaita and there has been no assistance offered. I just got forwarded to the "Amazon Team" and never heard anything back.
So, when it works, its good. when it doesnt work its a pain.
