The perch of the first birdhouse I received had a glaze glitch (third photo). I considered keeping it, as it didn't impair functionality. In fact, the very similar fly-through feeder I later found (second photo) has perches with unglazed edges that reportedly provide a rougher, and so more secure, surface for tiny clutching feet. But I didn't know that, and the flaw wasn't in a particularly useful spot. Besides, I like the idea of the perch being easy to keep clean.
This bird house pleases the eye, with its natural looking color and graceful shape, and it pleases the hand, with its heft and hard glassy curves. It begged me to insist on top quality. So I sent it back.
Both the original and replacement items came nestled in thick blocks of polystyrene made of two moulded sections, a front and back, inside a squarish, tightly fitted box. Though not eco-conscious, they were well protected on their journey.
I think it would make a thoughtful, low key, gift and would arrive intact. If it never holds a bird's nest, it will still look good. It could also hold some types of plants.
I considered red, but didn't want to advertise an eatery when I am actually running a hotel, so I went with blue. The replacement product I received was much darker than the defective one I returned, and both were more subdued than I expected.
On the fly-through feeder, I DID order red, since I want to draw lots of hungry birds. But it's not truly red; it's the classic safe color for lipstick, nail polish, blush. I believe the fly-through feeder was from a different seller than this house. But the dimensions and design are so similar (and also the packaging) that other people might want to pair these too. If so, I would not get both pieces in the same color. Mix it up.
