PVC pipes, but it just wasn't sturdy enough. Came across this one and it's perfect for my 8 year old. I love that it's height adjustable so we can use it for many years to come. The colors are a good match for our home and the legs are super sturdy. They are also padded so it doesn't slide on our wood floors. Overall very pleased with our purchase!
