Thick rubber. When tube arrives the valve stem is not screwed all the way. It comes with a valve stem tool to tighten the stem before inflating and to remove the stem to deflate it. When I first aired it up I did it in stages over several hours. I wanted to give the rubber a chance to equally expand and not have an area with a bulge. It has a strong rubber smell. I washed the tube in the yard with a garden hose, soap, and water. I let it dry and repeated the process a couple of more times. It greatly reduced the smell. The tube fit me well. I am 6'2" and weight 185 lbs. Took it for a for a long float the next day.

It is a big industrial rubber inner tube and that material is going to smell for a while. I suggest you buy it ahead of time before planned use and inflate it and let it sit around out in the Sun and flip it over to get both sides on the regular. It does come with some small tools for deflating and dealing with the valve stem and a cover to cover it so it isn't so sharp. Of course you can sit on it with the valve pointing down.
I also noticed that mine (maybe all of them?) inflate fatter on one side and thinner on the other. I kind of like that as it is like most chairs where that one side is meant for more of the mass of the upper body and the other side is good for the legs.
Mine was left inflated overnight and didn't show signs of a hole....I also could've actually put in water and looked for bubbles.
If you want to truly deflate it, you will have to use the valve stem tool to fully open it up and I didn't have mine at the time, so I used coolers and camp equipment to sit on it to press the rest out after it reached equal to atmospheric pressure.
I can't wait to use it in the water and the snow (also Water!)
